Many days have passed after the death of Lady Krysollos. November had told me that many have fallen, including Lord Chrysolite, during the battle. There was a beautiful ceremony for the solders we had lost and then we went to see both of my mothers’ graves. Even though they weren’t buried close together, I was still willing to go that extra mile to spend time at their graves.
NOIR’s goodbye tour was a lot of fun. We got to travel around and have a much needed “vacation.” Since November and I were going to the place where we belonged, we were discussing what everyone else was going to do. “Haden was thinking about getting a bartending license and I want to DJ at a club,” Minx said.
“She’s been talking about opening a club of our own,” Haden added.  We congratulated the two with warm hugs and then looked at Lil, who was fixing the hem of my skirt. “I’m going to Japan to start my fashion line,” she paused. “On the side, I’ve been making and selling clothes. A lot of people have been buying them. Then one day I got an e-mail from some people who wanted me to go work with them. Since duty calls for you and November, I thought why not go check it out. And I’ve got some relatives in Japan, so I thought I could visit them too.”
NOIR was playing in Ohio during the tour. During our set up and sound checks, I started to feel a bit sick. I was thinking it was from eating too many pancakes at IHOP. “Hey, are you ok?” a staff member asked as she finished setting up my microphone. I nodded my head and sat on a speaker. “Are you sure? You look like you’re going to spew chunks,” she added, handing me a bottle of water from the table near the stage. The way she emphasized spew caused everyone’s ears to perk up. I stared at my feet for a brief second and ran off to the bathroom, dropping the unopened bottle on the floor.
After puking up what appeared to be bile, Minx walked in to check on me. “Are you ok?” she asked. I walked out of the stall and nodded my head. “Yea, I feel better now,” I answered.
“Do you think you can hang on for this concert?” she questioned. I nodded my head with a smile, followed by a chuckle.
I managed to keep control of my stomach during our performance. After we left the stage, I headed straight for the RV we rented and passed out on the bed.

                             ***************

After our tour was complete, I flopped on my bed, relieved to be back in my own room. “I got a present for you!” Lil exclaimed, bouncing into my room with a small rectangle box. I sat up and stared at the box. “Minx and I noticed you’ve been acting a little weird lately, so I picked this up at the drug store. Plus, we’re girls, so we can pick up on this, but to be sure, I got this for you,” she said as she shoved the box in my hands.
“You think I might be?” I questioned, stopping before finishing the last word in the sentence. Lil stared at me, pulled me to my feet, and pushed me into the bathroom. “See you in five minutes,” she sang as she shut the door.
After taking the test, I paced the little bathroom. “This is stupid,” I muttered. I glanced at the little stick. Two pink lines appeared. “Damn it,” I swore under my breath.
“Am I right?” Lil asked as I opened the door. I said nothing and walked passed her, heading for my room. “What are you going to tell Navi?” she asked, using November’s pet name.
“I don’t know, but when the time is right, I’ll tell him,” I answered before lying down for a nap.

                             ***************

The next day, I hugged my friends goodbye and left to enter my new life. The Unseelie looked different from when I last saw it. It was full of life. The first creature to greet me was Lou. “Welcome home!” he said. Louise glided to my side with a smile. “Let us show you your new home,” she giggled. The two furries pulled me into the familiar castle. The outside looked the same, but the inside was completely different. It looked like an elegant gothic palace of the White Queen or something.
The main room was a big circle, glowing with candles, and a throne that over looked the whole room. They showed me the library, several bedrooms, the servant quarters, the dinning room, the kitchen, and the master bedroom. It was beautiful.
When I walked back outside to take a walk, a familiar cat-like creature greeted me. “The sphinx,” I whispered.
“Yes it’s me. Now remember that deal you made? After I heard Lady Krysollos’ rein came to an end, I searched all over for you,” she said, sitting several feet in front of me.
“Of course,” I replied, remembering the deal. I told her that I’d restore her to her original form. I took a deep breath and knelt before her, my hands touching her furry body. My body began to tingle as I imaged stripping the curse off her soul. I imaged her sitting in front of me as her true self, a dryad.  When my eyes opened, I saw a beautiful faerie looking at me. Her skin was a pale, bluish-purple. Her long, silky locks were black with a purple sheen. Her eyes were pure, milky white. “Luna Blossom,” I muttered. She smiled and kissed my cheek.
“Thank you so much, how could I repay you?” she asked, her voice sounding like a gentle breeze. I looked down at my stomach, which I had failed to notice its roundness, and smiled. “When the time comes, I will tell you,” I answered.

                             ***************

“Lady Haematite, are you dressed?” Louise called from the other side of my bedroom door. What felt like several months since I last saw November has passed. He was so busy restoring the Seelie and tending to everything that we hardly see each other anymore.
I looked at myself in the mirror. Even though my gown was a bit baggy and covered my roundness, I didn’t look as big like the women I saw in the Realm of Man. At least it’s a cute belly and not some huge stomach, I thought as I poked my belly. Then I turned to the door and opened it. “I’m ready to tend to my duties,” I announced.
“Good, now let’s go,” she replied. I followed the little bat-girl through a maze of hallways, corridors, and stairways. “Good morning, Lady Haematite,” a couple of horned faeries greeted with a deep bow as I walked passed them.
“Hello,” I replied, quickly waving at them while watching Louise through the corner of my eye. As we stepped into the main room, Lou was hovering in the middle of the room, watching us walk forward. “Hello Lou,” I greeted as I eased myself into my throne. Then Lou and Louise flew to the front doors and opened them. Schwarz stood outside, guarding the front entrance area. Even though he was quite far from where I was seated, I could of sworn I saw him wink at me when his huge head swung to look at me.
Soon after, I saw the familiar legs of a white creature walk up. With much excitement, I leaped out of my throne and ran to the door. There he was, my favorite white knight standing next to a white unicorn.

It worked, I thought, hoping the astral faerie could hear my words. I looked through the corner of my eyes to see Lady Krysollos looking through the window again. She exhaled loudly through her nose, little puffs of black smoke floating out of her nostrils. “I decided to be nice and let you die peacefully and painlessly, but it seems you want the painful death,” she muttered. I got up from the cluster of fluffy pillows and clinched my fists. She turned to face me, holding up her hands which were where two fire balls appeared, one in each hand. I quickly jumped out of the way as she threw one of them at me. Krysollos smiled a wicked grin, flinging another fire ball at me. Thankfully my reflexes worked quick like a cat, allowing me to jump out of the way at the last second. “Ouch,” I grunted, rubbing my left arm which got licked by the flames.
“You better start attacking because this game of cat and mouse is really boring,” Krysollos teased. I stood and held out my hands, clearing my mind and focused. My body began to feel light and the burn on my arm disappeared. I opened my eyes to see for a split second that I was naked and instantly clothed with a black goddess-like gown. My hair was taken out of the ponytail by unseen hands and then became longer. Then the trident-like weapon I welded back when I met the sphinx appeared in my right hand.
“So, you are able to obtain the power of the Royal Family of the Underworld?” she questioned, a hint of anger and sarcasm in her voice. “How sweet.” She unexpectedly threw another fire ball at me, but the power from my weapon shielded me. I flew up into the air, thankful for the high ceiling that allowed flying room. Krysollos flew after me, throwing more fire balls at me. I dodged each ball with newfound grace. “Is that all you got?” I asked. As she snorted at me, I flew in and hit her in the head as if I were swinging my trident at a baseball. The impact from my weapon threw her to the hard floor. “Oh, someone has some bite,” she teased, pressing her palm to the spot where I hit her to see blood on her hand.
She opened a palm and her fire ball turned into a fiery sword. Krysollos laughed and flew at me, thrusting her sword. I barrel rolled out of the way. As I turned to swing my weapon, her blade wedged in between two of the three daggers on the top of my weapon. “You’re good. I haven’t had this much fun in so long,” Krysollos laughed. Then she held up her free hand, sending a fire ball my way.
I screamed as the flaming ball threw me against the wall before I fell to the floor. My back ached and my wings laid limp. I felt the heat of Krysollos’ blade lick my neck. “Oh, what to do? Finish you off or toy around with you some more?” she muttered. I wrinkled my nose and bared my teeth. If it weren’t for my hair covering my face like a black curtain, she probably would have called me a dog. I slowly brought my head up, looking at her through my hair. “Maybe I should make you my pet,” I mumbled.
I saw that coming, I thought, wincing at the idea of being my aunt‘s slave. Lady Krysollos knelt down to my level, lowering her sword which left her open for a brief second. I took my chance and jabbed her in her side, feeling the blades cut deep, signaling the notion of my weapon slicing through the gap between the rib bones. “That’s for my mother, you bitch,” I snarled. As I stood, I ripped my weapon out from her flesh, blood dripping off the blades. Krysollos touched her wound and smiled. “I under estimated you,” she mumbled, blood dripping out of her mouth. She began laughing and stood up as if she were invincible. “Or should I say you under estimated me,” she added, blood still oozing out of her.
The horn, I remembered. Krysollos wouldn’t last long in her condition, but my wings and back were injured, leaving me in a weakened state. I grabbed the horn which had fallen during my aerial battle. “Please help us,” I whispered before blowing into the thin part of the horn which created a loud dragon cry. A second later, Krysollos grabbed me and threw me out the window where I blacked out.
My conscience kept going in and out. I remember seeing the Dragon King rip Krysollos’ head off. Then I felt a gentle hand wipe blood off my forehead. My head went fuzzy and then I felt my limp body being carried somewhere. I heard some familiar voices and then warmth.
I never thought feeling warmth would be so lifesaving. My eyes opened and I found myself in my bedroom. It looked the same as I left it before November and I disappeared. “Try not to move,” a small voice whispered. It was Lou’s sister, except she was glamoured to look like a human girl around the age ten. The smell of fruit and the small chirp in her voice made her identity a dead give away. “Where is everyone?” I asked. I carefully sat up, my body aching all over.
“Lord Chrysoprase is taking care of some business and he said to stay here. Your human friends said they will be back soon,” she answered. I nodded my head and glanced out the window. “What about everyone else?” I asked, grunting at the sudden pain in my chest. The bat girl shook her head. “The last thing this one saw was lots of blood and dead bodies. When this one saw you being carried away, this one panicked and followed his Highness and begged him to take this one in since her old Mistress is defeated,” she answered. I smiled in triumph. Tears came to my eyes and I began to laugh, ignoring my chest pain my laughing created. “Please try not to move,” she begged, placing her small hands on my aching torso.
“It’s over,” I laughed. Then I placed my hand on the bat girl’s head. “Louise, I grant you your freedom,” I added.
    “Louise?” she questioned.
“Yea! Do you like it? It was a bit on the spot, but Louise is your name.” She smiled a wide, toothy grin. “This one thanks you and wishes to serve you,” Louise said. I shrugged my shoulders. “Sure, but on one condition. No more of that third person, ‘this one’ talk. It’s ok to say ‘I’ and ‘me’,” I replied.
“Of course, this on…er, I thank you very much,” she said with a little bow.
Soon after Louise left my side to wander around, Minx and Haden burst in. “Rei! What happened?” Minx questioned, sounding like a worried mother. I chuckled and scooted over to allow her some sitting room. “I stabbed her good, but she still had some fight left. The Dragon King gave me a horn to call for him. I almost forgot I had it,” I trailed off.
“After those blood sucking cats nearly drained the blood bank’s supplies, we went to the hospital and picked up some papers. Your mother passed away a month ago. The doctor said he tried reaching us but had no luck. However, they did get a hold of my mother. She already had her funeral. When you are able to walk, Minx and I were thinking about taking you to see her grave,” Haden paused. “We also have a court date coming up soon regarding her Will.” I nodded my head. “She wasn’t my birth mother, but she was the only one I knew,” I muttered.
We had a moment of silence until Minx broke it. “So tell us about what’s going on,” she said. I took a deep breath and clasped my hands together. “I’m not human. Neither is November,” I paused, looking at their baffled looks. “We’re faeries. Before the death of my birth mother, I was hidden here, posing as a human for my own protection. My mother was the Lady of the UnSeelie and her sister was some psycho, jealous bitch. She killed her and turned the whole court into a miserable wasteland.
“Then with November, I guess you could call him a prince since his parents are the Lord and Lady of the Seelie. Anyway, he was sent here, posing as a human, in order to find me.” Minx looked down and then smiled at me. She placed a hand on mine. “Faerie or human, you’re still Rei to us, right Haden?” she said. I looked up at Haden and he was grinning too. “Even if we aren’t related or the same species, you’re still my cousin. Even when I found out you were adopted years ago, I still looked at you as my cousin,” he replied. My cheeks flushed and then I nodded my head. “Thanks,” I said.
Soon after, Haden and Louise went out to get something to eat for dinner while Minx and I talked. We talked about our futures and what will happen to NOIR. “Let’s make a CD and have a goodbye tour before we officially disband,” Minx suggested.
“Goodbye tour? Where?” I asked with a chuckle. NOIR was a local band, it’d be impossible to have enough fans in different locations for a tour. However, that grin on Minx’s face begged to differ. “Oh, Lil has her ways to make us well known. According to her, we have fans all over! She managed to get a demo CD before you and November disappeared. A lot of fans have been buying copies of it and there are some big record labels that want NOIR!” Minx exclaimed.
“What’s on that demo? Free sex to each buyer?” I asked. She smiled and took a CD out of her purse and put it in my stereo. It was so weird hearing my voice. Then Haden came in with his guitar. He played one single note and let it carry into a second of silence. Then Haden, Minx, and November began to play. It was so dramatic sounding and beautiful to my ears. The beat began to pick up and then my voice came in.
“Lil must of recorded us during one of our jam sessions before a gig,” I said.
“She sure is a crafty one,” Minx added.
We listened to a few other songs and then she took the CD out and then she popped on the TV after putting the disk in the DVD player. The screen was blue for a few seconds and then it turned black. A screaming crowd was heard in the background. One live song began to play with a bunch of live concert clips.
“Which record labels want us?” I asked.
“Um, I remember a few of them but I know there’s Metropolis Records, Projekt Records, and even foreign labels such as Midi:Nette have taken an interest in NOIR,” she answered.
After that, Minx waited for Haden and Louise while I fell into unconsciousness.

“Good morning, sweet pea,” a cheery voice rang in my ears. My eyes opened and found myself covered by a Hello Kitty comforter. I sat up and looked around my room. The powder pink walls. The Rainbow Bright poster. The collection of My Little Pony dolls. Those were all things found in my childhood room. I jumped out of bed and ran down the hall, into the bathroom. I turned to face the mirror but it was so high up that I only saw the top of my head. “What?” I whispered, my voice sounding panicky. The familiar plastic step was found at my feet. I stepped up and looked into the mirror.
“YAHHHH!“ I let out a loud shriek that I could have woken up the dead. I looked like my five-year-old self! “What’s wrong, baby? Is there a spider?” my mother asked, rushing to my side. When I was a child, I remember my mom was sickly. However, this woman looked like my mom, but healthy. Her hair bounced and was full of curls. There was colour in her cheeks and her eyes glittered. “What’s going on?” I asked, listening to the sound of my childish voice.
“I heard you scream,” she answered. I shook my head, my long dark hair covering my face. “A few minutes ago I was about to kill my aunt,” I said.
“You must have been dreaming. Now go get ready for school,” she replied before heading downstairs. I chased after her. “School? But I already graduated high school,” I muttered. My mother turned and came down to my level. “It was a dream, ok? Today is your first day of kindergarten. You better march your butt up to your room and get dressed or you will be grounded,” she growled. I snorted and dashed back into my room. “This isn’t real,” I groaned, pacing my room. Krysollos must of put me into some weird sleep and made sure she sent me far enough back before I met anyone, I thought.
I decided to play along with Krysollos’ little game until I could figure out a way to break the spell she put me under. “Are you dressed?” my mother asked from down in the kitchen. I scrambled around my room looking for something to wear. All I could find were overalls, some shirts featuring the Lion King, and very preppy clothing. I dug around some more and managed to pull together a suitable outfit. “This will do,” I whispered.
I found black and white stripped tights from Halloween, a black skirt, a white fitted baby doll blouse, and black dress shoes. To top it all off, I put my hair up in pig tails and put on some of my mom’s make-up that I snatched from her room. “I may be five, but at least I look normal,” I paused. “Ok mom! I’m dressed!” My mom walked into my room and gasped when she looked at me. “You’re too young for make-up! And where are you going? A funeral or a Halloween party?” she snapped. I looked up at my Tinker Bell alarm clock. “Shouldn’t we be going?” I asked.
“Yes! Come on! Don’t forget your backpack,” she said. I grabbed my backpack and we ran out the door and into my mom’s station wagon. “Sweety, you’re too little for the front seat,” she reminded me. I snorted and climbed into the back seat. My mom backed out of the driveway and drove off to my childhood elementary school.
After she pulled up into the parking lot and turned off the car, I reached over to let myself out but the door wouldn’t budge. Child safey lock, I remembered. I sat there in the back seat and waited for my mom to walk around the car and let me out. “Now hold my hand while we walk through the parking lot,” she said as I hopped out of the car. She grabbed my hand and led me to the front door. “November? Lil?” I quietly questioned when I saw an Asian boy with shaggy hair enter the school with an Asian girl. The boy turned to look at me before the girl pulled him with her.
When we entered the school, we turned right into the kindergarten and special education wing. “Here’s your classroom, Rei,” my mother said. An older woman with a lanyard hanging around her neck came down to my level and smiled. “Hello there! I’m Ms. Hand and you are?” she questioned.
“This is Rei,” my mom spoke. The woman smiled at my mother and looked back at me. “My, don’t you look pretty,” she said with a chuckle.
“She got into my make-up box this morning,” she paused. “Her dream must have been so realistic because she believes she’s a high school grad who was in a bizarre family feud.” The teacher stood up and glanced at me with those eyes that read ‘great, a crazy one.’
“It’s ok, I’ve dealt with special needs children before. Your child is in good hands,” she said. My mom said her goodbye and left me in a room of screaming children who could barely form a complete sentence with proper grammar and spelling. “Ok kids, take a seat!” Ms. Hand shouted. All the children ran to an empty chair, sitting by their friends or who they thought would be their BFF. I stuffed my backpack in a cubby with my name and then sat in an empty chair next to a boy who’d chase little girls with a bug. “Now, let’s go in a circle and say our names and one thing we like,” the teacher said. “Starting with you.” She pointed at a spoiled looking girl with a snotty looking grin on her face.
“I’m Racquel and I like kittens,” she answered.
“I’m Nicole and I like kittens too,” the next girl said with a giggle.
“I’m Gregory and I like monster trucks,” the boy next to her said. The line of children went on and on until it was my turn. “What’s your name?” the teacher asked.
“I’m Rei and I love this guy,” I began but was interrupted by all the kids shouting ’ew.’ The teacher chuckled and then hushed the children. “Ok, now let’s do a colouring project,” she said as she handed out sheets of blank paper and boxes of crayons.  “I want you to draw something important to you,” she said. Instantly, all the kids started doodling away on their paper. I started to draw Schwarz and then I drew the horn that the Dragon King gave to me. “Too bad I don’t have that with me in this dream world,” I mumbled.
The rest of the day seemed to drag and filled with the kids picking on me. When it was time for recess, the teacher took us out to the playground which was made of wood and metal, unlike the plastic sets the newer generations are familiar with. I walked around the playground and decided to hide under the oak trees until the teacher called for us.
“Yea, I saw her, but no one believes me,” I heard someone whisper. I quietly peeked around the tree and saw the Asian boy. He seemed to be talking to himself. Then he got up, turned around, and kissed me on the lips. My face turned red with blush. “You look like a faerie princess and so I wanted to kiss you,” he explained, wiping the lipstick off his lips.
“What do you know about faeries?” I asked. The boy reached out and grabbed my hand. I could see them! They were everywhere! “Are you in glamour?” I asked. He smiled and looked at the gap between the earth and the tree. “We can escape through here,” he whispered. Just like Alice following the rabbit down the hole, I followed the boy through the hole.
We popped out of another hole that was set on the other side of the chain linked fence. “There’s a hidden sanctuary of faeries this way. They will be happy I found you,” he said. I continued to follow him, feeling the faerie magick in the air. “By the way, I know I look similar to a childish form of Lord Chrysoprase, but I’m a faerie who lives in the dream world, collecting this dust-like substance that becomes glamour. We were surprised when we sensed your presence in the dream world, so a few of us materialized our astral forms into human-like forms in order to blend in with Krysollos’ dream puppets,” he explained.
“Do faeries create glamour?” I asked.
“Faeries typically don’t dream. They usually just sleep and wake when they are rested. However, when those few faeries do dream, only that faerie can use the glamour they created,” he answered.
When we got to the sanctuary, we were surrounded by a heavy fog. “This fog is a magical barrier that only allows my kind and anyone we allow to enter,” he said. “Outsiders will get lost in the fog and probably die. I am not too sure of what would happen.”
“Where’s everyone else?” I asked. He spun around, holding out his arms. “They’re all around us! They just haven’t materialized,” he answered. I looked all around, seeing nothing but the wall of fog. The faerie smiled and kept on walking till we reached a huge, clay pot. I looked inside and saw it was filled with thousands of glittery dust. “Is that glamour?” I asked.
“Yes. Well, they are dream particles before we turn it into glamour,” he paused and picked up a glass jar. “This is what we collected from you. Our plan is to return this to you, almost like you never fell asleep, causing you to awake.”
“Ok, give me back my dust,” I replied. The faerie chuckled, shaking his head. “It isn’t that easy. You know how you loose hair and it can’t be put back? Well, this is the same thing. Putting this back in you is pretty impossible. However, in the dream world, the impossible is possible, so it’s worth a shot,” he said.
“So what are you trying to say?” I questioned. He chuckled again and pointed to his head. “Use your imagination,” he answered. I wanted to punch him in the face for sounding so silly. “I’ve seen the dreams of many human children and they are very creative. They are very interesting creatures in their dreams,” he mumbled. I sat down and began to think about what kind of things I dreamt about as a child. Well, besides that one dream November and I shared, I’d dream about being a princess or becoming a hero by fighting off evil beings. Sometimes I’d pretend the dream was real when I was playing with Minx and her brothers.
Then it came to me. It was so simple! Maybe if I imagine myself taking back the dream particles and waking up, it will actually happen, I thought. I took a deep breath and closed my eyes, clearing my thoughts. First, I just tried to concentrate on my breathing, relaxing myself. Then I created images of the dust floating out of the jar and into my body. My eyes fluttered open and I found myself in a candlelit room, lying on a silk blanket.

14 Июль 2009 @ 17:20

As the door slammed behind me, I was surrounded by darkness. I couldn’t see a thing. However, I could smell the stench of blood stained roses. Must find a wall, I thought, reaching out my arms. I took small steps forward, listening to the sound of my boots shuffling across the floor. Then my hands felt something solid and cold. “There’s a wall,” I mumbled. I turned left and followed the wall till it led me to another door. This door felt easier to open and felt warm to the touch.
When I shut the door behind me, the room lit up. There wasn’t much in this room besides the torches that allowed me to see. “Greetings, Lady Krysollos has been expecting you,” a soft, feminine voice spoke. I looked around and saw a little bat girl who looked like Lou. “Are you related to Lou?” I asked.
“Yes, but this one isn’t as lucky as her older brother. Lou is allowed to do what he pleases. This one is a house pet and Lou is a gate guardian,” she muttered. I looked into the room behind her and saw a mattress, a few worn out toys, an old fashioned water pump, and a bowl. “What’s your name?” I asked. The bat girl shook her head. “This one isn’t allowed a name. This one was forced to forget her birth name when she came here. Anyway, this one will show you to Lady Krysollos,” she replied. She walked passed me and through another door way. I followed her through a dark hallway, down a set of stairs, through a small door, and into a room filled with doors. “How do you know which door leads to what?” I asked.
“That door we just walked through is the only door that has a rope handle. The other ones this one marked with chalk. This one was curious and got beaten for going through the wrong door. To prevent from that happening again, this one marked the door with a big X,” she answered, pulling some sticks of chalk out of her pocket. I walked more into the room and looked at all the doors. Most of the doors had X’s drawn on them. The other doors had smiley faces or little doodles on them. However, one door stood out. It had X’s carved all over it. I could see the door and the floor in front of the door was blood stained. “What’s behind that door?” I asked.
“Something horrible….this one was almost killed for entering that room. This one found a rusty knife and used it to carve those X’s,” she answered, her voice shaking. I walked up to the door and then turned to the shuttering bat girl. “Thanks for leading me here. I’ll take the self-guided tour now,” I said. She looked up at me, her big red eyes screaming in fear. “No! You can’t! This one must take you to Lady Krysollos!” she shouted. I turned and smiled. “It’s ok. I’m going to set you free, I promise,” I spoke softly. Even though she didn’t smile, I saw her eyes light up with joy. “Take this in case you lose your way,” she whispered, handing me a few sticks of chalk.
“Thank you,” I replied, pocketing the chalk. I turned back to the door and entered it. Beyond the door was stairway lit with torches. I could hear groans and cries coming from below. I quickly and quietly dashed down the stairs. The stairs seemed endless and going around in a circular motion was getting me dizzy. I felt that any minute I’d miss a step and fall. “Someone’s coming,” I heard someone whisper.
I finally reached the bottom step and I couldn’t believe what my eyes were seeing. There were rows and rows of cells that were crowded and filthy. “Go now, before she puts you in a cage too,” I heard a voice speak. I walked up to a cell and looked at a scrawny changeling who looked like nothing but skin on bones. “She hasn’t fed me in so long, I got too weak to work, so she threw me in here to die,” he whispered.
“Hold on just a little longer, young one,” I replied.
“What are you going to do?” a short and fat goblin snorted.
“I know you!” a female Nokke shouted, her bony finger pointing at me. I looked at her, curious of what she had to say. “Yes, it is you. I heard a few Ieles talking about you. They said a faerie, who was more exotic than Lady Rhodonite herself, had come to take back the throne.”
    “Ieles, eh?” I questioned.
“Well, normally, they’d drink human blood, but they too are slaves of Lady Krysollos. They are forced to drain the blood of any faerie who tries to escape. Apparently, they dislike the taste of our blood. The other day, I saw one help a goblin escape to the realm of man,” she added.
“It sounds like no one is standing in my way,” I muttered.
“The Ieles will gladly to you to Lady Krysollos,” the Nokke said. I nodded my head. The Ieles are these tall cat-like beings that walk on two legs like a furry. They are similar to vampires since they are active at night and drink blood. “How would I find one?” I asked. Another faerie pointed to a row of cells deeper in the room. “Two humans came here in search of someone. The Ieles are forbidden to drink their blood from what I’ve heard. I’m sure one drop from them will have them willing to do your bidding,” the faerie answered. I turned on my heels and dashed in the direction the faerie pointed me to. I looked in each cage, looking for human imperfections. Every now and then, a faerie would point me in another direction. “Rei?” a familiar voice asked. I turned to see two familiar faces. “Minx? Haden?” I questioned.
“You two have been missing for months. We looked everywhere for you. The cops found November’s car at the cemetery. They found some strands of hair and matched it with the hair on your brushes. However, the trail stopped there and there was nothing else that could be done. You two were missing, but a hotter topic than that Drew Peterson case,” Minx paused. “You couldn’t imagine how many news reporters, detectives, psychics, and paranormal investigators we spoke to.”
“None of them could figure out where you two had disappeared to. We spoke to Lil and November’s mom, but she said not to worry about it. Then Lil disappeared for a few weeks and we went back to the cemetery. Minx noticed a bat flying around during the day. We followed it for a while till we met this woman. She said something about her not having a human slave yet. Then we ended up here,” Haden said. I knew that bat had to of been one of Krysollos’s pets, luring any earthbound faeries into her horrible trap. Minx and Haden obviously took the bait and Krysollos took interested in them. “By the way, what are you doing here?” Minx asked.
“It’s a long story, but first, I need to get you two out of here,” I answered, looking for a way to get them out. My hands felt around the rusty bars, searching for a lock. “Do these cages have doors? Do you remember how you got in?” I asked. Minx and Haden stared blankly, scratching their heads. I rolled my eyes and fell over just as I took a step. “What the..,” I whispered, noticing something odd about the stone I tripped over. The stone was slightly lower than the others and there were little gaps between the other stones and this one. I pulled out a stick of chalk and marked it with an X. Then I looked carefully at the flooring in front of the cells around me. They all had the same oddly placed stone. “What did you find?” Haden asked. I smirked and stepped on the marked stone, pushing it down and causing a door to pop open.
“Look for the lower stone. Step on it and a door will open,” I whispered to the freed faeries before they ran off. “Now you two, prick your fingers.” Minx and Haden looked at me strangely. “What do you mean?” Minx questioned.
“Just do it!” I replied. Haden nodded his head and bit his thumb, making it bleed. Minx picked at a fresh scab on her arm. “Now what?” Minx asked.
“Give it a minute,” I answered. Then I heard some chattering coming from all around us. “Human blood,” I heard someone purr.
    “What’s that?” Minx asked.
“Ieles! These two humans are offering a taste of their blood in exchange for your aid!” I announced. A tall, skinny figure dropped from the ceiling and walked towards us. Its long pointy ears perked up as it licked it’s maw. A few more dropped to the floor and came closer to us. “But we want more than just a taste,” one of them purred.
“You can have more than this after I claim the throne. These two are offering a little bit for now. After this is all done, they will take you to a place where humans gladly donate their blood.” I watched them murmur amongst themselves. “What’s going on?” Haden asked, his hand on my shoulder. I turned to meet his fearful stare, Minx clinging to his side. “I know I have a lot of explaining to do, but for now I need their help,” I whispered.
“My clan will take the humans. They will do no harm to them since it appears they mean something to you. I will show you the way to her room where she waits for you. After you claim what is rightfully your’s, they must take us to this place you speak of, deal?” the leader of the clan purred.
“It’s a deal,” I replied. Within a blink, the Ieles took Haden and Minx and disappeared. The one that was left began to scurry passed the cages. “Stay close behind me,” he murred. I quickly walked behind him, going through the maze of cages, dodging the released faeries as they escaped to their freedom. Then, we got to this narrow corridor that was dark and seemed to go on forever. “One moment,” he whispered as he reached up and pushed a heavy object out of the way. He then grabbed me with his bony fingers and boosted me through a small opening into a dark room. I looked down into the hole and saw his big eyes looking at me. “This is as far as I go, but if you follow the staircase all the way up, she will be there. Now go,” he said.
“Thank you,” I whispered. I stood up and saw a candlelit staircase. The staircase was very gothic looking with the candle wax covering the stone floor and a black velvet carpet that acted like a ’red carpet.’ Each step seemed to tire me and make me feel like giving up. I felt like I could easily fall into a deep sleep. “Stay focused,” I told myself.
When I finally reached the top, the doorway was decorated with black silk drapes and iron crosses. I pressed passed the silk and into an open, candlelit room. “It’s pleasant to finally meet my niece face to face,” a haunting female voice spoke. I looked towards the window and saw a woman looking out it. The woman was dressed in a long red dress with a drooping back where a pair of blood red wings poked out. She turned and smiled at me. Everything from her hair to her make-up was red, except for her skin which was a caramel colour. As she stepped closer, the golden chimes dangling from her headdress clinked together. The way her red hair was styled around her headdress reminded me of a hair style Queen Amidala would wear. “Lady Krysollos?” I questioned. The woman stepped closer and smirked. “Please, we’re family. Call me Aunt Krysollos,” she said, waving her hand in the air as she talked.
I watched Krysollos sit on an iron bench and pat the empty spot next to her. “Come sit and chat with me,” she beckoned. I shook my head. She chuckled and looked at me from under her long red lashes. “I know you are here to kill me, but please, let’s talk before we fight,” she said. I stood there and watched Krysollos. She sighed and stood from the bench. “Fine, have it your way,” she muttered as she disappeared. I blinked and she reappeared inches from my face. “Have pleasant dreams,” she sang as I fell into darkness.

The forest of scorched trees was so thick and was filled with dangerous obstacles. I hung onto Schwarz’s back and kept my head low. “Careful!” I’d shout every now and then when it looked like we’d run into a tree. Somehow, he’d jump out of the way two seconds before colliding with the dead wood.
I looked over at November and the only thing he seemed worried about was keeping his wings tucked in so that they wouldn’t get damaged or get ripped off. “Are we almost there?” I asked Schwarz.
“We aren’t even half way there. In the center of the woods is a bog. This bog is home for several Will-o’-wisp and a Wyvern,” he said. I remember from medieval studies class back in high school, the Wyvern is this vicious snake-like beast with two back legs and two wings that doubled as arms. They were common on shields and banners as a symbol of strength and power. However, they were also a symbol for war, envy, or viciousness.
Now, the Will-o’-wisp were said to be little lights dancing around. Some claim them to be faeries. Some claim them to be a paranormal phenomenon.  I don’t care what they are. When I was young, I was outside early in the morning during a camping trip. I sat on the shore of the lake, admiring the beautiful sight of a light layer of fog swimming on top of the water. Then I noticed these green lights dancing on the surface. I sat there and watched the lights for a half an hour before they scattered and disappeared.
“Are we close to the bog?” I asked when I came back from my memories. Schwarz didn’t make a sound. Both unicorns slowed down into a walk, a sense of panic in their eyes, their snorting muzzles puffing out clouds of mist. “Don’t make a sound,” November whispered. My skin began to tingle as the stink of acidic water entered my nostrils. I narrowed my eyes and I could make out a watery substance about a half a mile away. I then noticed some lights swinging around the trees ahead of us, looking like they were leading us towards the bog. A few crows cawed loudly as they flew overhead, warning us of the danger ahead. Thank you kindly for your cares, but we must push forward, I mentally thanked the birds.
As we came closer, the ground became wet and mushy, causing the unicorns’ hooves to get stuck in the mud. However, Weiss and Schwarz kept on moving, determined to get through this. “What was that?” I asked as I nearly jumped out of my skin.
“What was what?” November questioned. I looked towards my right. “I saw this shadow quickly move passed us,” I replied. Schwarz snorted as he stepped onto a wooden bridge that stretched across the wetlands. “We’re in Wyvern territory, keep your eyes open and your senses ,” he whinnied. Weiss snorted in reply as she continued to follow. The ride seemed a bit smoother since we went to a solid surface from a mushy ground. “How long is this bridge?” I asked.
“I don’t know, but it is possible it could go on for several miles or more,” the black unicorn muttered. I deeply exhaled and glanced towards my left, watched a couple of Will-o’-wisps dance together. They looked so beautiful, so carefree. My heart ached to know that feeling and only that feeling. I wanted to be in bliss and not know what worry and fear were. However, reality refused to let me go and every thing going on around me was real.
“Could we move a bit faster?” I asked. Schwarz swung his big head around to glance at Weiss. I looked back to watch her reaction. “They’re speaking in an ancient, silent language. Very few know it. It was said that Lady Rhodonite knew it and passed it on to you before she sent you away,” November said.
“But that was back when I couldn’t walk,” I added.
“If you think that, then you underestimate the abilities of a baby fearie. Unlike human babies who take several years after they are born to develop memories, fearie babies take maybe several months. Now to comprehend it all is a different story,” he paused. “In short, you should be able to know what they are saying.”
I looked at Schwarz and tried to focus. The unicorn looked up at me and snickered. “Don’t push yourself. It’ll take awhile to come back to you. After being under all that glamour for so long, all memories and knowledge of this world were hidden in your brain. It seems some have been restored, but the rest will come shortly,” Schwarz said. He looked forward and his walking pace began to pick up to a trot.
About thirty minutes later of silence and short conversations, I began to hear a hissing sound coming from behind us. I didn’t think any of it because the hissing was so distant that I thought it was reaction in the water. “Can we go faster?” I asked when I heard this hissing sound get closer. The black unicorn snorted and went from trot to canter. I sighed in relief when I heard this hissing start to fade and then disappear. “So how much further is this bridge?” November questioned.
“We aren’t too far from the end, I can feel it,” he panted. I stretched my neck out and narrowed my eyes. “I think I can see the end!” I shouted. However, I probably shouldn’t have shouted because a large, scaly beast flew out in front of us. “The wyvern…hold on!” Schwarz neighed. His canter quickly became a gallop, causing me to cling onto him for dear life. He lower his head, charging towards the wyvern. Just as his horn was about to pierce the creature, it flew over us, making a horrible sound crossed between a hiss and a screech.
“Go on! Get out of here! I’ll take care of this bloody beast,” November ordered, Weiss slowing down and turning to face the wyvern.
“November!” I cried, reaching my hand out for him.
“I’ll catch up with you,” I heard him say, his voice fading as Schwarz galloped further away.
As we neared towards the end of the bridge, Schwarz slowed into a fast walk. I rubbed his neck when I heard him breath heavily. “Don’t worry about that creature. It’s nothing compared to Lady Krysollos. Chrysoprase and Weiss will be here shortly. For now, let’s focus on getting to the castle,” he panted. I nodded my head, straightening my back.
When Schwarz stepped off the bridge, the woods seemed to end right there. “I thought you said the bog was the midpoint of the woods,” I said.
“Yes, but then there’s a huge clearing where the castle is,” he answered, pointing his horn towards the stone building that looked more like a mansion. Of course, the stereotypical castle is big, have bridges, and men who stand in the towers with bows and arrows. However, this castle looked more like a mansion with a tower on the left and right, giving it its ’castle-like’ quality.
Schwarz trotted up to the stairs where I dismounted. “I’ll stay here. The rest you must do on your own,” he said, nudging my shoulder. I smiled and threw my arms around his neck. “Thank you for everything,” I said, my words muffled from my face being buried in the crest of his neck. I pulled away and walked up the steps. “Here goes nothing,” I breathed before making my way passed the heavy door.

As Nanami set sail towards our next destination, I went back into my room and changed into a black, silk that I found on the bed. The silk was strapless and looked like something a goddess would wear. “Everyone is preparing for the battle,” November stated as he entered the room. I stared at the horn which I was still holding onto, remembering the words the Dragon King had told me.
I listened to November’s light footsteps come closer to me and welcomed his warm embrace. “Are you nervous?” he asked.
“Yes,” I immediately and bluntly answered. He caressed my bare neck and rubbed my arm. “In fact, to be honest, I am frightened. This feeling within is worse than the nervous shock I got when I got up to the microphone during NOIR’s first concert,” I said with a chuckle. “I remember that I was so freaked out that I couldn’t remember the words to the song we were playing. My palms got sweaty and I thought I was going to faint. Then you came up behind me and quietly told me to take a deep breath, close my eyes, and the words will naturally come. Haden followed in with a mini guitar solo. The crowd loved it and didn’t seem to notice how petrified I was. I began to sing and I imaged I was in my room, singing along to a CD.” I smiled at the memory and how little such a terror was compared to the current situation. November spun me around so that we were looking eye to eye. “When you come face to face with Lady Krysollos and you suddenly feel helpless, just take a deep breath and close your eyes. Everything will fall into place,” he said before kissing me deeply. We then fell back onto the bed, letting passion take over. I temporarily forgot what got me so tense. I wished the moment would last forever. “I love you,” I whispered into his ear.
The sounds of grunts and shouting from outside of the room woke us from our slumber. We jumped out of the warmth of each other’s arms and scurried to put on the clothes we had tossed onto the floor. “She knows we’re here,” November muttered as he looked out the window. I jogged towards him and saw that we were being attacked by a few kelpies that had jumped onto the deck. “The kelpies are loyal to Lady Krysollos?” I questioned.
“No, they are only loyal to themselves, but she must have made a deal with these,” he answered.
  “Deal? What kind of deal?”
“She probably traded the lives of a handful of her slaves for their loyalty. They must be desperate to give in to her wicked deeds,” he grunted.
“Survival of the fittest,” I whispered. It was sad to know that innocent lives were taken, but this is probably what makes this realm and the realm of man similar. No matter where you go, someone dies for the sake of someone else’s life and generally, it‘s not in all the best ways.
November held out his hand and a sword appeared from a white beam of light that shot out of his pores. “Don’t worry about fighting right now. I’ll protect you. However, you must fight Krysollos on your own,” he said before leaving my room. I watched him fight off the creatures through the window. An archer shot an arrow, missing November’s arm by an inch, and dug itself in the kelpie’s eye. Green blood oozed out of the wound as the horse-like faerie screeched a painful sound. While everyone covered their ears to block the twisted cry, November swung his sword, slicing off the keplie’s head to silence it. The other keplie glanced at its dead comrade. Its emotionless eyes looked as if the poor creature was already dead inside.
Thankfully, the first battle ended quickly when November’s blade danced through the air and cut the other kelpie’s head off. I sighed in relief and went to sit in a wooden chair at the east side of the room. “Toby rid of these bodies and you two clean the blood off the deck,” I heard Lord Chrysolite command. I listened to the many footsteps shuffle across the deck, four of them slowly came close to the door of the room. “Are you ok, Lady Haematite?” I heard Schwarz’s voice from outside of the room. I walked to the door and opened the door for him. The black unicorn looked at me with his old, caring eyes and entered the room. “Lord Chrysoprase fought gracefully. Did you see him?” he asked.
“Yes I did, but those creatures…their eyes. I’ve seen a kelpie’s eyes before and they have such cruel eyes. Those eyes were dead and emotionless like zombies,” I replied. My hand touched his soft nose, slowly went up his muzzle, around his right ear, and back at my side. “Sadly, you will see many like that once we reach land. Lady Krysollos is so dead inside that she destroys any hope of those who lurk in the night court. Very few have managed to keep their sanity because they believe in you. You are our savior,” he whinnied. I glanced out the window and saw that we would hit land very soon. “Let us prepare for hell,” I said.
After Schwarz left the room, I looked around for some sort of battle suit or armor I could wear to protect my soft flesh. All I managed to find were tight, black pants with small dragon scales sewn into the fabric, a fitted black tunic made of the same material, and knee-high boots with silver armor plates attached. The whole outfit was light weight and flexible, fitting my shape perfectly.
Before leaving to join everyone, I found a black ribbon to tie back my hair so that I won’t have to worry about hair flying in my face. “Deep breathes,” I whispered as I closed my eyes. My fluttering heart slowed down to a calm beat and my shuttering body relaxed. “Let’s go.” I took one more deep breath, grabbed the horn, and stepped onto the deck.
All heads turned to look at me and then everyone bowed as if I were a god. “Did I miss something?” I muttered. As everyone slowly rose, November joined me at my side. “Why did they all bow?” I asked.
“When you walked out of the room, you showed the look and pose of a hero. No ounce of fear was to be seen. Your eyes glowed with courage and confidence,” he paused and moved closer to my ear. “You looked like a true Lady, like your mother.” I blushed deeply and nodded my head to the solders. Schwarz appeared at my side, clad in armor, appearing like a war horse. “Ready?” he asked.
“There’s no turning back, so we must be ready, right?” I answered. Even though no smile was to be found on Schwarz’s lips, I could see the smile in his eyes.
Weiss and Lord Chrysolite silently joined us. “When we get close enough, the bridge will be put down and we will march onto the land,” Chrysolite announced. November gripped my hand. It seemed like he had worry written on his heart. I reached over and kissed the corner of his lips. “Don’t worry about me. If you must, take a deep breath and close your eyes. The rest will fall into place,” I whispered. November smirked and nodded his head. “Thanks,” he said.
Nanami slowly pulled up next to the shore and attached its bridge onto the lifeless ground. As the solders marched onto the land, Chrysolite mounted Weiss, November mounted the small white unicorn, and I mounted Schwarz. ‘Deep breathes,’ I mouthed to November. He chuckled and looked at me with those eyes that read ‘I know you’re scared too.’
The three unicorns marched off the ship and Nanami sailed away. “Follow me, solders,” Lord Chrysolite spoke, leading the faeries, November and I riding close behind him.
  “It’s quiet,” Schwarz muttered.
“Isn’t it always quiet here?” I asked. Schwarz shook his head. “It’s too quiet.
“Sounds like a set up for an ambush,” November added.
“Yes, but it won’t happen because she knows we’d be expecting it,” he replied, turning his massive head to look at November.
“How do you know that?” I questioned.
“I’ve been here longer then you have. I’ve seen her cruelty. I know what she thinks,” he paused. “I once was her slave, but I escaped and managed to stay alive. It’s rare for someone to escape her grasp alive.
“I’m sorry,” I whispered. He snorted and whipped his tail, the ends whipping my right leg. “Not your fault,” he softly spoke.
We marched south for so long, that my butt was becoming numb and I felt antsy. “What’s that smell?” I heard a faerie from behind us mumble. I sniffed the air and quickly covered my mouth and nose. “Disgusting! Smells like rotting corpses!” I spat. November looked at me and gave me a weird look. “What? There was this time when one of Minx’s brothers took Minx and I to this spot where there was a dead guy that had been rotting for several months,” I explained.
“I can see them,” Lord Chrysolite spoke. We looked forward and off in the distance were a row of Nucklelavees. “What are they doing this far away from shore?” November asked.
“You’d think the hideous beasts would stay where they belong, but this is Krysollos territory, remember?” Schwarz answered.
“Ugh, why do they have to smell so foul?” I groaned.
“They say that the Nucklelavees are humans who died with a wicked heart and couldn’t find peace. In a sense, they’re like zombies, hence their nasty smell,” November explained. I giggled at the thought of us fighting against zombies, but I knew he was being serious. “So what’s the fight plan?” I asked.
“Does kick ass sound good?” Lord Chrysolite asked. November and I gasped, our jaws dropped at what he said. He turned to look at us and smiled. “What? I’ve been to the realm of man dozens of times, mostly to check up on my baby boy here and I managed to pick up slang,” he said. “Do you think your old man can’t be hip?” November rolled his eyes and I laughed hysterically. Chrysolite faced forward, his mood more serious. “About the task at hand, how about we line up the archers for the first attack?” he suggested. November and I nodded our heads and dozens of elves quickly moved forward, lined up, and prepared their bows. “Execute first movement,” he ordered.
At the same moment, each archer released their arrows, creating a swarm of arrows that flew through the air like one big, black cloud. Loud grunts and cries were heard, letting us know that the aerial attack was successful. “Second round!” Chrysolite shouted as the beasts who survived the attack charged forward. The archers quickly pulled out another arrow and set them flying. “Archers! Back off! Everyone, go!” he shouted. The archers fell back as the rest of the army charged forward, ready to swing their weapons and cast their spells.
I sat up on Schwarz’s back to see the enemy. My eyes widened as I saw that the Nucklelavees were just the tip of the iceberg. There were dozens of creatures from chimaera to minotaurs, from illes to phookas. My heart began to speed up. “Where are the dragons? They’re going to die!” I cried, tugging on Lord Chrysolite’s sleeve. He turned to look at me and smiled. “Do you not have faith in the good king?” he questioned. I looked at him, my eyes puzzled. Then the sounds of wings flapping were to be heard behind us. I turned and my face lit up in relief as I saw the dragons coming to our aid.
Lord Chrysolite turned to November, his face serious. “I can handle everything from here now that our guests of honor have shown up. Take Lady Haematite to Lady Krysollos’s castle, which is beyond the forest,” he said, pointing towards a forest of dead, black trees. Then he dismounted Weiss. “Take Weiss. This little one isn’t strong enough to make such a rough journey to the castle,” he added.
  “But,” November started.
“I’ll be fine. The most important thing is to get to that castle and destroy the wicked one. We’re all counting on you! Everyone is sacrificing their lives to save the lives of future generations! Now no more words and go!” Chrysolite ordered. November nodded his head and dismounted the small unicorn. Then he got on Weiss and looked at me. “Let’s go while the foul ones are distracted,” November said.
“Thank you for everything and goodbye,” I softly said to Lord Chrysolite with a polite bow of my head.
“I’m glad I got the chance to meet you, now go,” he replied with a smile. Schwarz let out a loud neigh and we left the battlefield.

After we said our goodbyes and Lil was sent on her way home, we began marching east. However, the unicorn that took Lil and me to Lord Chrysolite quickly stopped us. “Mind if we join your army?” she asked. Then a couple more unicorns, which were smaller, appeared. “It’s pointless to stay in our glade when the whole court is in danger,” she added. “We would rather fight for our home than stand around doing nothing.
“Of course you may join our army. We’re on our way to Dragon Island,” Lord Chrysolite answered. As the two smaller unicorns came forward, another unicorn appeared. It was the black unicorn. For some reason, I felt so relieved to see the black unicorn that I ran up to him and threw my arms around his muscular neck. “I missed you Schwarz,” I muttered, the unicorn’s name appearing in my head like a memory.
“I thought you couldn’t leave the Night Court,” November said, sounding baffled as he crossed his arms. Schwarz snorted and tossed his head back. “I started to head back, but that eyeless woman told me to run away and don’t stop. The only way I could run was north. Those beings that normally linger at the border were no longer there, so I came up here. Weiss filled me in on a few things,” he explained, tilting his horn towards the large white unicorn.
“Good, now let’s go,” Chrysolite said, clapping his hands together. Schwarz kneeled, allowing me to mount him as Lord Chrysolite mounted the white unicorn Schwarz called Weiss and November mounted one of the smaller unicorns. Then, we finally started our journey east.
Lord Chrysolite lead, November and I followed closely behind him as the rest of the troop walked, flew, and marched behind us. The whole ride to the eastern edge of the continent was filled with murmurs, short conversations, and sometimes silence. Weiss stopped moving as the salty waters touched her hooves. “How do we cross?” I asked. A smirk formed across Chrysolite’s face as he glanced at me. “We’re taking Nanami, Mistress of the Sea,” he answered, pointing at the large ship making its way towards us. The wooden vessel was stained brown with green trimming and had large, white sails. The figurehead was carved to look like a beautiful, winged cat. “I see Bastet has been keeping Nanami safe,” November commented.
“Even goddesses protect their children,” Chrysolite replied. I remembered from my Myth & Legends class several years back that Bastet is an Egyptian Goddess, also known as the Cat Goddess. She is mother cat, but she is also known for protecting travelers besides her feline children.
“All aboard,” Lord Chrysolite called, snapping me out of my thoughts. Weiss moved forward, up the long wooden bridge that leads onto Nanami’s deck. Then the smaller unicorn November rode followed Weiss and Schwarz walked up the bridge after them. When we reached the deck, Schwarz knelt down so that I could get down. “Thank you, my friend,” I said, messaging his neck. His soft nose pressed against my cheek, kissing my cool skin. As I rubbed his muzzle, he responded to my touch with a soft nicker. Then Weiss made a loud whinny, causing Schwarz’s ears to perk up, and then he walked over to her side.
Suddenly, a long arm wrapped around my waist. I perked up, my head turning to look into November’s bright eyes. “My I show you to your room? Ships move a bit slower than cars, so it may take a day or two before we reach the island. Might as well make ourselves comfortable while we can,” he said. November lead me passed two heavy doors and down the stairs into a big living room area. We sat on a padded bench that faced a fire place. I was about to ask how a fire place could travel the waters, especially when almost everything on Nanami was clearly made of wood. Of course, magic. I almost forgot how strong faerie magic can be. On top of that Nanami was probably blessed by the gods too, I thought.
Our chance to be alone was soon crushed by the dozens of faeries who came in to lounge in the living room, eat the fruit sitting on the table, or rush off passed another door that lead to a hallway of more doors that lead to bedrooms. ”I wonder why m’lord desires to seek out the dragons. I’ve heard rumors that most of them fled to the realm of man,” I heard an elf gossip, watching him lean closely to another elf through the corner of my eye.
“Lord Chrysolite and the Dragon King are wise. Don’t you dare talk about petty rumors. Have faith in m’lord,” the other elf replied, a hint of sarcasm in his tone. I turned my attention to November. The look in his eyes told me that he had been listening to the elves too. I reached over and wrapped my fingers around his hand which was clenched in a fist. “The Dragons are a proud and noble race. They would never flee. They would rather die as heroes than die as cowards,” November whispered under his breath.
I bit my lip and then walked over to the gossiping elves. Their silver eyes looked at me blankly, showing no respect. “You two should be ashamed of yourselves!” I snapped, my voice bitter. The one who started the conversation tossed his head and took a bite of the purple, pear-like fruit in his hand. “We don’t know what you’re talking about,” the second one said. I stomped my foot, straightened my back, and stuck out my chest. “I thought the elven race doesn’t stoop so low to gossip like a foolish human,” I spat. I felt all eyes on me, some curious, some shocked. “The Dragon King knows what he’s doing and Lord Chrysolite has faith in him, so you better hold your tongue!” I added. The first elf smirked and leaned in to look me in the eyes. “And if I don’t?” he questioned.
“If you don’t, I’ll kill you,” November spoke, the tip of his sword pressed against the elf’s neck. The two elves looked at him blankly and quickly scurried passed the door that lead to the bedrooms. November looked at a dwarf who had an ax in his hand, ready to strike if commanded. “Keep a keen eye on those two,” he ordered the dwarf. He nodded his head and disappeared behind the bedroom door.
When the other faeries looked away and went back to their own conversations, I dropped to my knees, my heart racing. “You did a good job. However, you still need to work on your pose, but not too bad for your first time. I’ve heard stories that your mother could enter a room and make everyone fall to their knees in a heartbeat,” November softly spoke as he put his sword away. He smiled as he picked me up with one arm. “What else did you hear about my mother?” I asked as we walked onto the deck.
“I heard she was a beautiful and powerful Lady. She loved you very much and I know she’d be very proud of you. I know you’d make a great leader of the Night Court,” he answered. I smiled, my cheeks rosy pink.
For the rest of the day, we watched mermaids swim with Nanami and other sea faeries dance with the waves. As the night came, all the faeries had a big feast followed by dancing and singing. Meanwhile, I stood at the bow of the ship, watching the glittering waters. “Why aren’t you inside enjoying the party?” Schwarz asked as he walked up next to me.
“I ate some food if that’s your concern,” I said. He snorted mixed with a chuckle. “Where’s Chrysoprase?” he questioned.
“He’s in the captain’s quarters, talking to Chrysolite,” I paused. “Why didn’t you start talking to me when we met back when I didn’t know my real identity?”
“Oh I was talking. When I got no response, I just assumed that the glamour was so strong that you wouldn’t have been able to hear me yet. When you touched that dagger, it must have removed a little bit of glamour, allowing you to hear me,” Schwarz explained.
For about an hour, we stood there, staring at the sea as if it had put us under a hypnotic trance. Then I grew tired and ended up falling asleep. When I awoke, I was naked and curled up under a silk sheet on a bed covered with furs. I peeked out from under the sheet and found myself in a large, quiet room. Schwarz was asleep in a corner by the curtain covered window. I lied back down and closed my eyes for a minute, not realizing that I fell back into a deep sleep.
I woke again to the sound of loud chatter and foot steps outside my door. “What’s going on?” I asked, wrapping the sheet around me as I jumped off the bed. Schwarz stood as he heard me running around my room, looking for my clothes. “Why don’t you wear something formal?” he nickered, opening a closet with his horn.
  “Why?!” I asked.
“To look nice when you meet the Dragon King.
Suddenly, I heard a knock at the door. “Are you awake, Lady Haematite?” someone asked.
“I’ll be right there!” I answered as I quickly grabbed a gown and threw it on. Then I opened the door and saw that my room was right next to the captain’s quarters. “I’m ready!” I stated. Everyone stared at me, a few chuckled. “Um, Rei, were you dressing in the dark?” November whispered in my ear. I looked down and saw how super short the skirt on my dress was. Thank god there was a beaded belt buckled tightly around my hips or otherwise I’d be giving everyone a free show. Then I noticed from the waist and up was only two strips of fabric that managed to cover my breasts and tie behind my neck. I looked very trashy, but I decided to go with it and act like I planned to show this much skin. “What? The humidity is terrible today,” I said, which was the truth. November chuckled quietly. “This was Lil’s doing, wasn’t it?” I asked, leaning towards him. He explained to me that before she left, she sketched out a bunch of clothing ideas and had some seamstresses help out complete my new wardrobe.
I was surprised to find out that only Lord Chrysolite, November, and I were going to see the Dragon King while everyone stayed on Nanami. Lord Chrysolite said that he wanted to meet with us three and no one else. “So what’s this king like?” I asked.
“He’s a friend of mine. When we were youngsters, a kelpie was trying to drown me. Then he risked his life, killing the beast and saved me,” he paused. “He’s the only ruler of his race to be half-dragon and half-elf. The reason he was chosen to be the heir because his father was the former king.”
“How did his parents meet?” I questioned.
“His mother was a slave on a continent east of here. The former king saw her standing on a cliff, prepared to jump to her death. He was attracted to her and decided to ask if she wanted to live with him instead of with a bunch of trolls. Obviously she agreed.”
As we neared to our destination, dragons roared as they flew overhead. A large clay castle was visible in the distance. Then I spotted a tall, dark figure facing us. “Good to see you, Dragon King,” Chrysolite greeted, grabbing the figure’s forearm, forming a brotherly handshake. The two quietly talked amongst each other. Meanwhile, I took a good look at the king. He was quite tall and had dark skin. Over all, he looked like a muscular dark elf with large, black dragon wings coming out of his back.
“Well isn’t it our two heroes. Chrysoprase, you look well. It’s good to have you back,” he said, giving him the same handshake Lord Chrysolite gave him. Then he looked at me and smiled. “And Haematite, you look like a mirror image of your mother,” he complemented.
  “You knew her?” I questioned.
“Of course! Who didn’t? She was beautiful, talented, and always smelt like roses,” he paused, taking a deep inhale. “Now you, you smell more exotic and arousing to my senses. How would you feel about being my queen?”
I instantly felt myself blush and become speechless. November wrapped an arm around me, tucking me close to his chest. “She has to decline that offer. Her hand is mine,” he spoke.
“Oh? Well you are very lucky to find yourself such a rare faerie. She has that little something that isn’t common,” the Dragon King said. I was glad November saved me from making myself look foolish. Then I remember that little rumor and turned to face the king. “I have a question. Why were some of your dragons in the realm of man?” I asked.
“Messengers. They were looking for you two. When I got the word that two strangers have entered this realm, I called them with this horn,” he answered, holding up an ivory horn that was carved in the shape of a roaring dragon. He handed me the horn and winked. “I’m sending five of my best solders to fight with you, but if you find yourself staring death in the eyes, blow that horn and I will come to you in a heartbeat.”
I looked at the horn and then at my comrades. “Thank you,” I said and then we left the island.

Before I blacked out, all I could remember was the sharp pains flooding my body. At first it felt like these tiny needles pricking my forehead, but the pains grew sharper and began to spread. I could hear my body screaming, not realizing that the screams were my own. Then I eventually gave into the soothing darkness. However, the dark wasn’t as pleasant as I thought. First of all, memories came back and all these names and words I never heard of had appeared in my head. “Why is she taking so long?” a familiar voice whispered. The voice was distant but it was nice to hear it and it helped ease the agonizing pain. “Keep in mind, Rhodonite used a lot of glamour on her to keep her hidden from Lady Krystallos. I guess to put in simpler terms, for you, it was like taking a mask off. For her, it’s more like coming out of a cocoon made of iron. The mask is easier to remove while a cocoon takes longer to remove and isn’t as easy,” another voice spoke.
“I think she’s starting to awake,” a third voice chimed in. This voice was much closer and sounded like it was coming from right next to me. I heard quick paced footsteps and then something firm and warm touching my hand. One eyelid was forced open. At first everything seemed really bright until everything came into focus and a little Greenie stood on my cheek, holding open my eyelid. It was Wisteria. When she let go, my other eye opened and I saw November holding my hand. Well, he looked like November, but more fearie-like. His snowy white hair was pulled back and he was wearing a white and gold silk uniform, looking like a faerie tale prince.
My eyes glanced around the room and I saw Lord Chrysolite and the silver woman from earlier. I also had noticed that we were still in Lord Chrysolite’s room. However, something was missing or more like someone. Where’s Lil? I thought. As I sat up, it felt like something was weighing me down. I looked over my shoulder and saw a pair of black faerie wings coming out of my back. “Lady Haematite, if you’ll follow me, we may get you cleaned and properly dressed,” the silver woman said. Oh yea, that’s me, I thought, remembering all of my memories that had been suppressed. November let go of my hand and the silver woman lead me down the root staircase, through another hallway, and into a blue crystal room. “Who are you?” I asked. She looked at me and smiled. “I am Lady Topaz, wife to Lord Chrysolite, mother to Lord Chrysoprase,” she answered. Lady Topaz turned towards a chest, dug around, and pulled out a black gown that looked like it was made from teeny-tiny, flat, black pearls. She set it down on her bed and started to undress me. Then she took a wet cloth from out of a porcelain basin and cleansed every inch of my body. Topaz placed the cloth next to the basin and helped me dress into the pearl dress. I stepped into it, the moisture on my body helping it slide up with ease. The gown was a rather tight fit, but it was loose below the hips. There was no back to the dress, which allowed my wings to be without constriction. Topaz tugged on my wings to show that they were so tough that Chuck Norris couldn’t rip them off. “These aren’t so fragile, so don’t panic if you lie on them,” she explained.
After the dress was on, Topaz went to her dresser and came back with a bunch of crystals that she decorated my hair with. “What’s the occasion?” I asked.
“Tonight, there’s a dinner party for the return of the two heroes,” Topaz answered. I’ve never been to a dinner party and since this wasn’t the realm I was used to, this wouldn’t be your average gala. Lady Topaz lead me through more mazes of hallways and into what appeared to be a courtyard. A couple of Boggans walked around, lighting lamps with metal staffs shaped like basilisks. “You will be seated over here,” Topaz said, pointing towards wooden tables and wooden benches with images of faeries carved into the legs.
“Where is everyone?” I asked, noticing how empty the place was.
“We might be faeries, but it takes some of us awhile to get around,” Wisteria buzzed, fluttering passed me and sat on the corner of a nearby table. Topaz chuckled at us and swiftly walked towards a center table. Then a huge swarm of pixies, Greenies, Pillywiggins, and Moor Sprites fluttered, glided, and flew passed me, the group scattering around. One faerie in the group I recognized was Foxglove. It apparently was well acquainted with Wisteria since they were chatting up a storm. “Cute how fast they chatter, isn’t it?” Lil commented from behind me. I quickly spun around and nearly took us both to the ground when I hugged her.
“Where have you been?” I asked, sounding like a concerned mother.
“Sorry about disappearing on you. After you blacked out, I pardoned myself and had a pleasant chat with Lady Topaz. She said that she’d create a one-way door for me after the party so that I can return home. Since this might be the last time I get to see you, I helped put together this party,” she explained. I pulled away and noticed she was wearing a very beautiful gown. It was a golden silk with bead stars sewn on the sleeves and the hem of the gown. “Well, I have to go. They’re waiting for me,” she added, kindly waving at the dwarves and other faeries behind me. Lil then smiled and joined the group she waved at.
I looked around the courtyard, which was filled with dozens of faeries within the matter of seconds. Some of them were beautiful, some were ugly, and some were so hideous that they were handsome in their own way. Even the most ugly dwarf faerie seemed cute in my eyes.
Another thing I noticed was the clothing. I felt so over dressed being decked out in crystals and such a dazzling dress. The faeries that were wearing clothing were dressed in silks and simple cloths. Even the prettiest silk gown didn’t seem to stand out as much as my dress did. I seemed to stand out more than a sore thumb when I noticed all the looks I was getting. Some of them bowed as I walked by. Yea, like that won’t make me stick out any less, I thought sarcastically. A few furries scurried by, snickering at the baffled look on my face. “M’lady!” a voice spoke from my right. I looked over to see my white prince smiling at me. My heart almost stopped by his stunning beauty. I’ve seen him like this before, but why I am reacting like this now, makes no sense. Maybe it’s how his skin glistens in the moon light, I thought.
“Lady Haematite, come sit with me,” he said, waving me over. I walked over to him and sat on the bench, next to him. “It’s going to take awhile to get used to my real name. I’m so used to Rei,” I muttered, sitting next to him.
“Tell me about it. I’m sure it’s harder for you since you were a baby when you got glamoured. For me, it was more like going under an alias so long that I forgot my real self. You grew up with your fake identity and never knew the real you,” November replied. We sat in silence for a while, feeling the stares of the other faeries. “Is it ok if I still call you November and you call me Rei?” I asked, a heavy blush on my cheeks. From the corner of my eye, I watched him lean over and kiss my right, rosy red cheek. “Of course it’s ok, Rei.”
November wrapped his slender fingers around my hand and squeezed it as a male Nokke stood before the tables. “Welcome faeries from both wood and water! Tonight is a very special night,” he paused. “Tonight, we are celebrating the return of Lord Chrysoprase and Lady Haematite! Tomorrow, they will be leaning an army with Lord Chrysolite to end Lady Krystallos’ rein of terror. For now, relax, feast, and be entertained!” He bowed and disappeared behind a curtain of blossoms.
Then, a group of faeries came out, serving dishes filled with fruit, bowls filled with honey, and plates pilled with fresh bread. “Please, eat. I bet you are very hungry, Lady Haematite,” Lord Chrysolite said. I didn’t notice he was sitting at the table with us. I was so excited to see November that I didn’t see anyone else. “Try this,” Lady Topaz suggested, holding out a small berry that looked like a grape. I ate the berry and had to cover my mouth prevent liquid from gushing out of my mouth, a couple of giggles coming from behind us. “How is it?” she asked.
“It’s delicious, but it’s very juicy,” I answered, keeping my hand over my mouth.
“Ah! What you do is bite into it slowly so that it doesn’t explode in your mouth. And then you suck out the juice. Chrysoprase learned that the hard way when he was a little one. Juice got everywhere!” Chrysolite said. I snorted, holding back a laugh from the image I got of November covered in juice. “I remember that day. It took a week to get the shy ones out from hiding. They thought we were being attacked,” Topaz added, popping a chunk of honey-covered bread in her mouth. I chuckled at the sour look on Topaz’s face as I reached for some fruit.
Topaz and Chrysolite bickered back and forth for a few minutes and quickly hushed as a nymph dressed in a loose gown stepped forward. A few dwarves, elves, and neckans come out and sat to the side, holding their instruments. They waited for a few seconds and began to play a very enchanting, mesmerizing, and fluid song. At the same time, the nymph began to dance, her flowing clothes enhancing the beauty of the dance. It almost appeared as if she were dancing under water. At the end of the nymph’s performance, she used some magick to create a huge red flower appear at her feet and close around her. When it opened back up, she was gone. “She’s not done yet,” Topaz muttered very quietly in my ear. She was right. The flower then ripped itself up into a thousand pieces, floated around, and came together, forming the nymph. Everyone clapped and she bowed. “That was amazing!” I exclaimed before stuffing bread slathered with honey in my mouth.
“Beautiful, yes, but she’s probably vain,” November commented.
“Remember, Haematite, not everyone here are as sweet as they look,” Topaz added. I nodded my head, taking note of what she said.
The rest of the acts of the night were a few singers and a fire dancer. Then the band began to play and everyone stood from their seats and danced. I watched faeries twirl, glide, sway, and side step to the music. Some of them were amusing to watch as they tried to gracefully dance with their chubby bodies and stubby legs. “M’lady,” November said, holding out his hand.
  “Oh! I can’t dance!” I replied.
“This isn’t a waltz. All you do is move to the beat and dance with your heart.” I looked at November and then quickly glanced at the crowd of dancing faeries. “Ok, but if I look stupid, tell me,” I muttered, placing my hand in his. He lead me into the crowd and he began to move his body fluidly. Here goes nothing, I thought, closing my eyes. I listened to the beat, listening to the song’s upbeat melody. Then I let go and began to dance. My hips swung, my arms floated above my head, and my feet spun me around. I felt like a raving ballerina. Everything was so hypnotizing that all sense of time and consciousness seemed to fade away.
I later awoke, naked in a warm, soft bed of furs. When I sat up, I saw some folded clothes and a note on the side table.

Dress in these. I’ll come get you in a little bit. Lord Chrysolite,” I read.

The clothes that were provided weren’t as fancy as the pearl dress from the party. It was a simple black tunic with wooden buttons on the cuffs for decoration. On the back of the tunic, towards the small of my back, was a little, lacy corset design, giving me the hint that Lil made the outfit for me. To go with my top were a pair of black, knee-length trousers and black leather boots that went a little passed my knees. “You look lovely,” Chrysolite commented, standing by the room’s entrance.
“Thank you,” I replied, slightly curtsying. He warmly smiled and then signaled me to follow him. We silently walked through mazes of hallways and passed the curtain of willow. November, Lil, Lady Topaz, and dozens of armored faeries were waiting outside. “I’m going to miss you two,” Lil cried, hugging November and I as if we were dead. When she pulled away, she stood next to Topaz. “May you two put a stop to Lady Krystallos cruelty. She plays dirty and may use something against you to make you give. Never give in, no matter how good she‘ll make it seem,” Topaz warned.
“How would you know?” I thought out loud. She blankly stared and then pulled back part of her gown, showing a scar. “I foresaw your mother’s death. I stupidly thought I could change to her destiny and I tried to save her. Krystallos, the foul woman she is, tried to cut my heart out, so that she could devour it. Instead, Rhodonite distracted her, saving my life, and she ended up dying anyways. I have this scar as a reminder of my stupidity. Not even glamour can conceal this scar,” she answered.
“M’lord, what’s our plan?” November asked, breaking the awkwardness following Topaz’s words.
“First, we need to build our army. Lady Krystallos is expecting us and she isn’t going to let us get to her so easily. I was thinking of traveling to Dragon Island,” Chrysolite replied, pointing east.

The dark forest was very eerie and quiet. Despite the sunlight leaking through the branches, it was still rather dark. Even the ground below our feet left mushy from the lack of sun to evaporate the excess water. Every now and then, I’d stumble over some loose soil, but November would catch me from my fall. “Lil, does Minx and Haden know where you are?” I asked, breaking the silence. Lil shook her head. “No, but I left a note for mother to tell them what I discovered,” she answered, staring off into the distance.
“If they are here too, let’s hope they’re safe,” November added. Lil and I nodded our heads. Then my thoughts lingered to the gray horse and it’s black eyes staring at us. No… I thought, shaking my head. November squeezed my hand and I looked at him, his glossy eyes gazing back into mine. “What’s up?” he asked, his voice low enough that Lil couldn’t hear.
“I saw a horse standing outside of the willow circle. It looked at us with hungry eyes. It gives me the chills just thinking about it,” I whispered.
I then stopped, my eyes widening and my body stiffening with fear. “What’s wrong, Rei?” November asked. My hand quivered as it pointed ahead of us. In the distance, I could see the grey horse. It appeared to be marching towards us, it’s legs kicking forward like the stallions from Medieval Times. “Kelpie,” Lil muttered. I looked passed Lil and saw a shaggy, chestnut coloured kelpie standing about ten feet away. “They appear to be surrounding us,” November stated. I looked forward and the marching kelpie was nowhere to be seen. Instead, there was a very handsome man standing before us. “Don’t let him distract you. That’s a glamoured kelpie. The hair is a dead give away,” November whispered. The man’s silvery hair looked a bit like seaweed when I looked at him through the corner of my eye. If November never told me that, I’d be too busy ogling at his gorgeous features.
“What do you want?” Lil shouted. The glamoured kelpie smirked. “We want the human and then you may pass in peace,” he answered.
“What do you mean?” November questioned. The kelpie pointed at Lil. November and I aren’t human? I thought, slightly tilting my head. Then I looked at Lil who was trembling. “Give me the dagger,” November whispered, nonchalantly holding out his hand to me. I looked down at the dagger that was strapped to my belt. “Here,” I whispered as I untied the dagger and gave it to him.
As November swung the tiny blade, it turned into the sword that he used to fight that creature in the Night Court. He glared at the kelpie with vicious eyes. Then I felt Lil’s hand grab mine and before I knew it, we were running like hell. Everything looked like a blur as we passed by. If it weren’t for the adrenaline pumping through my veins, I would have tripped over something. I looked forward and saw a bright light. We’re almost out of here, I thought. As we got very close to the light, we threw ourselves into the warmth.
“Are you ok?” a soft, feminine voice asked. I looked up from the field of clovers I clung to. A white unicorn was staring at me. Its pink nose was only inches away from my face. “Can you hear me?” she snorted, her breath smelt like lavender and lilies.
“We got attacked by kelpies and November is still back there!” I shouted as I stood. The unicorn straightened up and looked at Lil, who was standing next to me. She moved her large head close to Lil and inhaled. “He’s attracted to this one’s scent. It’s very sweet and exotic,” she muttered.
“That’s nice, but what about November?” I questioned.
“What about me?” November asked as he wrapped his long arms around me and kissed my right temple. My heart felt like it stopped and I turned to see the white warrior he turned into during the battle with that creature. “I traded the dagger, but it shattered and these two orbs appeared in my hand. One was white and the other, black. The white one disappeared into my body and now I’m stuck like this,” he explained. Then he opened up his hand and there sat the black orb. The unicorn whinnied, causing me to turn around. “I know about those orbs! Lady Rhodonite and Lord Chrysolite made them. The orbs hold their power and were hidden in a dagger. Lady Krysallos knew too much and used it to murder Lady Rhodonite. Then someone stole the blade…that’s all I know,” the unicorn said.
“Can you take us to see Lord Chrysolite?” November asked. The unicorn neighed and reared high into the air, turning so that we were facing her flanks. “I’ll take you to him,” she replied. November lifted me onto her muscular back and set Lil behind me. Then he climbed on behind her, sitting close to the unicorn’s rump. “Hold on tight,” she neighed. As I felt her muscles flex, I held onto her mane and pressed my body into her neck.
Riding a unicorn is nothing compared to a horse. I remember riding trails when I was younger. One time I lost control of the horse and I got lost. I remember being so scared that I threw my arms around its neck and I held on for dear life. Luckily, I was riding with Minx and her cousins who were ranchers. They found me all the way in a different county. I’d rather ride a psycho horse than a unicorn. Sure they’re faster, but I get a little motion sick on them. Seeing the blurs of scenery go by makes me dizzy. Pretty much riding a unicorn is like riding a roller coaster or something of that  nature.
When the unicorn slowed into a stop, we found ourselves in the most beautiful scenery ever! The ground was nothing but soft pink flowers that sounded like they were singing each time a breeze swam through them. All the trees were filled with gorgeous flowers and tempting, ripe fruits. A few tiny faeries glided passed us, holding little white flowers in their tiny hands. I was in so much awe that I didn’t hear November calling my name over ten times. “Rei, if you don’t answer me, I’m going to pull you off without warning,” he said, sounding annoyed. I turned to see him holding his arms out, Lil giggling behind him. “Oh, sorry,” I muttered, letting him catch me as I dismounted.
“Lord Chrysolite is over there, under that willow tree,” the unicorn said, pointing her muzzle towards the willow ahead of us. November seemed more eager to meet the Lord because he was almost running to the willow. “Wait up,” Lil groaned. As she chased after him, I stood, dumbfounded by how no other human has seen such beauty, such grace. “Hurry and catch up with your friends!” a tiny voice shouted. I looked around and saw no one. Then I felt a sharp tug on my hair. “Ow!” I yelped, turning my head to look at my shoulder. It was a tiny faerie with silvery skin, big black eyes, short blue hair, and big blue butterfly wings on its back. “Sorry, but not everyone here is your height,” it snapped. It let go and fluttered in front of me. The faerie appeared to be the size of my pinky and female. She then fluttered onto my head and tapped it, which was probably a punch from her view. “Forward!” she ordered. I quickly moved forward as if the faerie was controlling me.
“Glad you finally decided to join us,” Lil greeted.
“Where’s November?” I asked, noticing he wasn’t with her. She pointed at the thick curtain of willow branches. Then she noticed the faerie that was sitting on my head. “I see you’ve already befriended a Greenie. What’s her name?” Lil asked.
“I’m Wisteria the Wallflower,” she answered. Lil and I awkwardly stood in silence. “Well, that’s what the others call me, but just call me Wisteria,” she added. I could feel her moving around on my head, but I wasn’t sure what she was doing. “It seems like November is going to have to fight our friend here for who claims you,” Lil teased. Wisteria must of stuck her tongue out at Lil because she was sticking out her tongue at the faerie. “Hey! Cut that out!” I said. Lil looked away and Wisteria climbed down a tiny braid she had made with my hair and sat on my shoulder.
A few minutes later, a woman with silver skin, silver hair, and white eyes stepped out of the curtain of willow. “Please, follow me,” she said, her voice sounded like a thousand chimes ringing in the soft breeze. The woman was so heavenly, Lil and I stared at her in awe. Her hair was decorated with crystals and white flowers. The gown she wore looked like a dress found on a goddess. As she turned to pass through the curtain, everything flowed ever so gracefully. It was magical. “Come on! Move it!” the Greenie shouted in my ear. I blinked and grabbed Lil’s hand, pulling her through the curtain.
When I thought the scenery outside the willow was amazing, the inside was even more stunning! It’s a mystery how a whole palace was able to keep hidden under the willows. Lil and I followed the silver woman through a series of hallways made out of bark and long blades of grass. “Go up those steps,” she woman said before walking away. We carefully walked up the long stairway, which was made out of tree roots that had been twisted. At the end of the root stairway, we entered a small open room. It looked like we entered a very sophisticated tree house. “Welcome to my room,” a very enchanting male voice greeted. Lil and I both swung around to see a very handsome young man standing behind us. He looked very similar to November when he had the white hair and white eyes, except this man’s hair was shorter and decorated with wooden beads. He also wore a crown made of branches from a holly bush. “That’s Lord Chrysolite! Stop gawking at him and show some respect!” Wisteria hissed, tugging on my ear lobe.
“That’s Lord Chrysolite?!” I replied, shocked by how young and gorgeous he looked. I was expecting an older man with a long beard. “Why yes, my name is Chrysolite,” he muttered to himself.
“Where’s my brother?” Lil asked, anger in her voice.
“Ah! You may see him later, but please, sit,” he answered, leading us to a corner of the room which had silk pillows piled on the floor. We sat with him on the pillows. Wisteria fluttered off my shoulder and sat on a spot between Lil and I. “Where’s November?” Lil pressed, this time a little more calmly.
“Who? Ah! You mean my son,” he answered, holding up his index fingers. My mouth dropped and my eyes widened. Son?! I thought. Chrysolite cleared his throat and exhaled. “The person you know as November is my son, Chrysoprase. When Rhodonite was killed and Haematite was hidden, I sent my son to find her and protect her. I glamoured him to look human and sent him to the Realm of Man. However, his memories got suppressed. I sent some faeries from my court to watch over him and sent him in the right direction,” he explained.
“So my brother is a faerie?!” Lil questioned. He nodded his head. “After his body absorbed the white orb, his glamour dropped and all his memories of who he is returned. Don’t worry, he hasn’t forgotten his memories he spent as a ‘human,’” he added. I heard Lil sigh in relief. November, faerie or not, was still her brother and I know it’d kill her if he forgot the precious memories they built.
Lil may have felt relieved that she still had a brother, but there was still the question about me. “Lord Chrysolite, awhile ago, I ate these berries and Nov… er…Chrsoprase told me that it changed my appearance. I also remember these odd dreams,” I paused and pulled the locket of the mysterious woman out of my pocket. I was glad I took it with me before we left. “Who is this woman?” Chrysolite chuckled and plucked the black orb out of his mouth. He held out his hand, touching the orb to my forehead. From the corner of my eyes, I could see Lil looking at me as if she were about to scream. The Day Court Lord pressed the orb harder causing a painful sensation to pulse through my skull. “It hurts,” I muttered, my eyes rolling back as my body slumped over.

We finally made it to the Day Court. The camel seemed to be grateful that we were surrounded by lush, green grass. As it began to feed on its newfound bounty, I noticed a little piece of paper fall from the camel. “What’s that?” I questioned. November picked up the piece of paper and unfolded it.

“Good thing you made it on time because I forgot to add that the camel had enough water in its hump to last it three days. If you exceeded passed the three days, it would have died and well, I’m sure you can figure out what would have happened. Anyway, you are now at the mercy of the creatures of the Day Court. Not all of them are kind hearted. May the rest of your journey be an adventurous one, Jena,” November read aloud.

After he read those last words, the paper went up in flames. “So what now?” I questioned.
“Well, we need to find the Lord and speak with him. I’m sure the camel will be fine here, so let’s grab what we need and go,” he answered. November and I went through the packs, pulled out one sack of water, one empty sack, and the blankets. “Enjoy your new life,” November muttered as he took the bags and rope off the camel. The camel looked up at us and then walked away with a grunt. We stood there in silence for a couple of minutes until November grabbed my hand. “Ready to go?” he asked. I nodded my head and we continued our travel, hand in hand.

                             ***************

A day passed and no sign of faerie life was to be seen. “Where do you think they could be?” I asked.
  “Glamour,” November replied.
“What?” I questioned, completely baffled. We stopped near a brook and sat on the grass. “Glamour is a type of magick that they use to hide their true identity or change their own appearance,” he paused to rub the nape of his neck. “My mother has these books around the house and…erm…yea.”
“So, could they use glamour to be invisible?”
“I‘m not sure on that, but most can’t see them or don’t even notice them, so they don’t have to use glamour like that.”
I nodded my head and looked forward where a few leaves were falling from the trees. “So there could be one up in that tree, making the leaves fall?” I asked, pointing at the treetop. We both looked at the branches very carefully. “Keep quiet,” he whispered. November quietly and gingerly walked towards the tree. I saw his lips move, but I couldn’t hear what he was saying. Then he looked at me and waved me over. “What?” I questioned, making my way over to him.
“It’s ok, little one,” he whispered. I looked up and saw a very small, brown figure watching me. “It’s a pixie,” he added. November held out his hands and the little faerie fluttered on his palms and sat down. The pixie looked at me with its little green, gem-like eyes. November brought his hands down so that it was at eye level. “My name is Rei,” I softly said. It smiled and giggled. “My name is Foxglove,” it replied with a cute smile.
“Foxglove, can you tell us where everyone is?” November asked. The pixie bounced off of November’s palms and fluttered in the air around us. “They’re everywhere! Some of them are in hiding,” it answered.
“How do we get to the Day Court Lord?” I asked.
“You keep moving, silly,” Foxglove answered, poking my nose with its teeny-tiny finger. Then it perched itself on the tree and pointed up the brook. “Look for the blossoms,” it added before flying away. November and I moved away from the tree and followed the water.
“Blossoms…” November muttered to himself. I looked at him, curious to what he was thinking. “What’s up?” I asked.
“I’m not sure. It’s almost like that pixie triggered forgotten memories,” he answered. I wanted to keep looking at him, but after stumbling over a few stones, I had to watch where I was walking. “What kind of memories?” I questioned, holding onto his arm for support.
“I remember seeing all these blossoms. I remember being surrounded by pinks, reds, purples, whites, greens, and silvers. They smelt so sweet and warm. That’s all I remember,” he replied. As I reached over to hold his hand, I noticed how thin and bony my hand looked. My will to get here must have caused me to forget that we barely had anything to eat, I thought.
“Are you hungry?” I asked. November stopped walking and looked at me. “Why are you asking?” he questioned. I looked around and saw a shrub with some delicious looking berries growing on it. As I staggered over to the shrub, I saw a small creature with fox ears, a foxtail, honey coloured eyes, and reddish fur. It was picking off some of the berries and eating them. “Can I have some?” I asked the anthro fox creature. It licked the juice off its teeth, picked a berry, and handed it to me. I took the berry and ate it. The berry was absolutely amazing! It melted in my mouth, oozing out a salty-sweet liquid that made me crave for more. “What are you doing?” November asked.
“You have to try these!” I exclaimed, holding out a berry. He looked at me strangely. “What?” I asked, eating the berry since November wouldn’t take it.
“Your skin is snow white and your eyes are pitch black,” he said. November glared at the fox creature and pulled me away from the shrub. The creature snickered with an wicked grin and then ran off. “What was that?” I asked, licking my fingers.
“It was a furry. They’re pretty much animals who walk and talk like humans. A lot of them are tricksters,” he answered.
“Then what did it make me eat?” I questioned.
“I’m not sure,” he muttered. He plucked a berry from the shrub and examined it. “It feels hard like a cranberry,” he paused, placing the berry in his pocket. “Maybe we can get answers later.”
“What about food?” I groaned, sounding like a child.
“Try to hold on a little longer, Rei,” November replied. He placed a loving hand on my cheek and kissed my forehead to help calm me. Then he cradled me in his arms and carried me as I fainted from lack of nutrition. When I came to, I was lying in a very soft patch of clovers. All around me were, what looked like long, stringy, green hairs. Once I sat up, I realized that the hairs were the branches of the willow tree I was resting under. “November?” I questioned, pushing away some of the branches like a curtain. Wow, I thought, looking at the scenery. The sky was a lovely dark blue-violet colour and the moon was so bright that it seemed to make all the plants glow like in some sort of dreamland. There were more willows all around; their weeping branches dancing on the crystal clear pond in the middle of it all.
”Hey Rei! It’s been awhile. Are you hungry?” a familiar voice asked. I looked up and it was Lil! She walked through the curtain of willow and sat down next to me, holding out a bowl shaped leaf. “Here, eat! Navi said you haven’t had anything to eat. I caught some little red fish and picked some freshwater seaweed,” she added. I grabbed the bowl and began to devour the food Lil had brought. When I finished, Lil took the bowl and stood. “If you want to talk to him, he’s over there,” she said, pointing across the pond. I nodded my head with a smile and went to see November.
November was sitting under another willow tree, gnawing on a strip of seaweed. His eyes looked like dark pools of ink as he gazed at the pond. As I slowly passed through the curtain of leaves, his eyes quickly shifted to look at me. The look he held gave me the chills up and down my whole body. “November?” I quietly questioned. His look softened and he turned to me. I sat next to him, still weary and cautious. “Are you feeling better?” he warmly asked. I nodded my head with a thankful grin on my face. Then I glanced back at Lil who appeared to be talking to the water. “You’re wondering about how she got here, right?” he asked, my attention going back to him. “Well, there’s this old hallow tree in our backyard. For some mysterious reason, it is alive. Our mother calls it the Tree of Fae. Anyway, Lil was sitting by the tree, talking to it. Mother says the tree listens and helps us, so we talk to it when we have no one we wish to talk to and no light to guide us. Well, Lil found a book in the hallow opening of the tree. It was a little story about a heartbroken dryad who died, but for some reason, a hallow tree grew in the place she died and her spirit was to stay bound to it.
“Lil walked into the hallow and there was an opening on the other side. What she saw wasn’t the backyard, but some area not too far from here. She turned around, packed a few things, and then here she is,” he explained. Then his face went grim, leaning back on the trunk of the willow. “She told me that about a month and a half passed since that day we disappeared.” My heart felt like it stopped. It seemed like about a week or two passed here and a whole month passed on the other side. In the back of my mind, I knew that my mom was already dead or very close to it. November reached out for my hand and squeezed it as if he knew what I was thinking. He pulled me close to him, cradling me in his arms. My ear pressed up against his chest, listening to the calm pace of his heartbeat.
“So what is Lil doing?” I asked, noticing she was still talking to the pond. November chuckled. “You can’t see her?” he questioned.
“No,” I answered, narrowing my eyes, wishing that I could focus my eyes better like a camera lens.
“She’s a nymph. This is her home and she’s letting us stay here for a while. She also got us the food. You should thank her,” he whispered into my ear. I frowned since I couldn’t see her. November pushed me up and watched me with playful eyes. “Jerk,” I muttered as I walked to Lil’s perch.
“Hello, Rei,” she greeted with a smile. I sat next to her and stared at the pond. “Thank you for your aid,” I mumbled, feeling a bit stupid for talking to something I couldn’t see.
“You’re most welcome,” a watery, feminine voice spoke. I blinked my eyes and saw a very childish looking girl staring at me. Her thin, blue hand reached out touched my hair. “Soft,” she murmured with a warm smile. Her big aquamarine eyes gazed at me with great interest. I noticed that her body was submerged in the water; however there wasn’t much to see. She had very long, stringy powder blue hair, blue, scaly skin, and a long, silvery, translucent tail. If November didn’t tell me she was a nymph, I would of mistaken her as a mermaid.
“Aren’t you lonely?” I asked, noticing that there were no faeries or other beings around. She shook her head and pointed to the willows. “They keep me company,” she answered.
“What about intruders? Aren’t you worried about danger?” I asked, throwing more questions at her.
“No, I am not worried at all. There’s a lake not too far from this place. Kelpies are known to lurk around there. If I feel like I’m in danger, they will automatically come to my aid,” she explained. I looked up from the nymph’s gaze and saw a gray horse on the outside circle of willows from the corner of my eye. It stared at us for a minute before walking away. “We should go now,” Lil whispered in my ear. As we stood, the nymph kept her eyes on us. “Ready?” November asked, not realizing he was next to me while I was talking to the nymph.
November grabbed my hand and the three of us left the circle and entered a dark forest. There was the morning sun starting to peek through, proving some light as we proceed our journey.

The hot sun shown bright on us, making our travel a miserable one. Thanks to Jena, we were provided with capes that made traveling under this sun possible. Since our skin is rather fair, painful sunburns are one thing we don’t need to stress over in such a situation. Along with the capes, Jena also proved us with several goat stomachs filled with water, camel jerky, two wool blankets, a compass, and some feed for the camel. “This is supposed to last us three days?” I questioned, looking at our supplies. I peeked out from under the hood to look at November. He looked so focused, treading through the sand didn’t seem to bother him. Every now and then, he’d look at the compass to make sure we were still pointing north.
I huddled back under the darkness of my cape and remembered what happened before I passed out. The image of that beautiful white, winged warrior November changed into came to mind. His beauty was so breath taking and obviously not human. Who is November really? I thought.
“November, do you remember what happened during that fight?” I asked, speaking louder.
“Yes, what about it?” he answered while checking the compass. I brought my hands up to my chest as I imaged the white warrior’s perfection and the way he fought. “I saw you change into a different person. Well, you were still you but you looked different and you fought like the God of War,” I stated. I heard him take a deep breath before making his reply. “Back when I used to have those dreams, before we met, I’d wake up with odd changes. One morning my hair was completely white. It freaked me out so much that I hid all my hair in a baseball cap. Another time Lil almost fainted because my eyes were white and it scared her. I told her that I was sporting a pair of blind eye contacts. However, after a little bit, I got back to normal,” he paused. “You’re the only one I told this to.”
I absorbed each word he said like a flower soaking in the sun, especially his last sentence. “So, who or what are you?” I asked.
“I don’t know,” he quickly answered.
As the night came, the temperature went from hot to freezing. November lead the camel to a palm tree, tied it up, and began to set up camp. He pulled out a Zippo lighter from out of his pocket and created a little fire out of the dried leaves and drift wood he found. Meanwhile, I unpacked the water, jerky, and blankets from out of the bags strapped on the camel‘s sides. We sat next to the fire, curled up in the wool blankets while sharing one of the water filled goat stomachs. No words were spoken that night. I think it’s because of the sun’s heat that totally drained our energy. It was quite awkward to sit in silence, but at least we had each other.
That night, I had a dream. A tall beautiful woman was standing by the campfire November made. She was wearing a beautiful black gown, stained with blood. Her features seemed to mirror mine. Then I noticed her eyes, they were filled with sadness. The bloody tears that streamed down her cheeks glittered from the glow of the fire. “Who?” I managed to whisper. She slowly brought her right pointer finger to her lips to shush me. With the same finger, she pointed to the moon. “…The next full moon…” I heard her whisper. All fainted away in a distorted blur and I awoke with my head on November’s chest. As I sat up, I saw the sun crawl up the east horizon. “Nov, are you awake?” I mumbled, nudging his shoulder.
As quickly as I could, I threw on my cape, snuffed out the smoldering embers, and packed our things away. November growled as I took the blankets from him. “I was sleeping,” he muttered.
“The sun is rising. We have a long day a head of us,” I replied as I chewed on a piece of jerky. November got up and put on his cape. “What’s with you this morning?” he asked, rubbing the sleep from his eyes.
“I’m not that fond of sleeping on sand,” I answered, taking another bite from the strip of jerky. November looked at me as if he could see passed my lie. “What’s the real reason?” he questioned.
“I had a dream and what was the moon’s position last night?” I asked, looking in the sky.
“Um, I think it was a full moon, but what does that have to do with your dream?”
“A woman said something about the next full moon. That’s all I know, so we should try to keep moving,” I answered. November kissed my forehead and helped me onto the camel’s back. “Alright, sweetheart, let’s keep going,” he said as he untied the camel. My beautiful rocker flipped open his compass, looked towards the northern horizon, and day two of our desert journey began.
It wasn’t till three hours into our second day till I noticed at maybe the in Between wouldn’t be so easy to cross. The good part of it was that the ground was flatter and had more plants sprouting out of the ground. The down side was the bones scattered all over the ground. “You have that dagger, right?” I asked.
“Yes,” he answered, his hand caressing the blade that he kept by his side.
“Good,” I muttered. We continued to press forward, despite the fact that the camel began to act stubborn. The animal would grunt and refuse to go any further, sensing something ahead that it didn’t like. “Come on, it’s ok,” I spoke to the camel in a soothing voice in order to give it the courage to keep moving.
“Ack! You smell that?” November suddenly spoke in disgust. The air was filled with the scent of blood and decay. “Take this,” he added, handing me the dagger. “I think you need it more than I do at this moment.” We crept forward, noticing the abundance of bones as we kept going. “Who goes there?” someone growled. We looked at a hollowed bolder which where the voice came from. Two lion paws stepped out of the darkness of the creature’s home. Then a woman’s head came out. “It’s a sphinx,” November stated as the beast came out of her home. Her wings stretched four feet away from its body and then came back into its folded state. Then she lazily walked towards us and sat down on a petrified tree stump. “The answer is man!” November shouted. The sphinx looked at him and laughed. “Of course it is. Everyone knows the answer to that stupid riddle. However, I prefer to go straight to the kill than wait for some lost idiot answer the world’s easiest and most over used riddle,” she spoke, looking at us hungrily. The sphinx licked her lips and then looked in my direction. “I haven’t had a meal in such a long time,” she added as she crept down, preparing for a pounce.
My body began to tingle as I held out the dagger. “Rei!” November shouted. My body froze as I watched the hungry creature come closer and closer to me. Awake! an angelic voice spoke in my mind. The dagger glowed and transformed into a long spear with two blades sticking out at an angle from the blade in the middle, looking similar to a trident. The sphinx flapped its wings and landed on the ground before the blade cut her open into a bloody death. “I remember that weapon. It’s a weapon that was passed down generation to generation in the Royal Family of the Underworld,” she gasped.
“Royal Family?” I questioned. The sphinx growled as she looked me in the eyes. “The Royal Family are those who have the blood of Hades and Persephone running through their veins,” she answered.
“How do you know this?” November asked. The sphinx perched herself on the petrified tree stump. “I know this because I used to belong to the Night Court. I used to be a dryad. My name was Luna Blossom. My body was the colour of the moon’s soft glow and my hair was finer and longer than Aphrodite’s lovely locks. Both man and god wanted me because of my rare beauty. I remember relaxing by a brook one night, feeling the cool water cascade over my legs as I was absorbing the light of the moon. Hades came to the world’s surface and saw me. He told me how enchanting and beautiful I looked. He said that he wanted to take me to the Underworld where he can admire my beauty everyday. As handsome and charming he is, I declined because I wouldn’t be able to see the moon from the Underworld. He smiled and asked if I would let him come visit me every night. I allowed him to and he came to see me every night like he said he would,” she replied.
“Why are you now a sphinx?” I asked. The being glared at me before continuing her story. “Well, Persephone thought he had replaced her with me. I only know he didn’t because if he did, he would of snatched that crown off her head and fed her to a demon within a blink of her pretty eyes. After all, he wanted her so badly that he kidnapped her. Anyway, Persephone discovered that he was spending more time with me than that spoiled wench. Instead of just simply burning me to ashes, she thought it’d be funnier to turn me into this creature. She said that no man or god would ever fall for my looks ever again. When man started war with the gods and Christianity became everyone‘s life story, the gods created different realms for us to live in. There’s the Realm of Gods, Realm of the Dead, Realm of Fae, and Realm of Man. Persephone thought it’d be twice as hilarious to place me here, in hell.”
“And what does this have to do with this weapon?” I asked before I realized it went back to the form of a dagger.
“Persephone was holding it as turned me into this! Also, I’d try to leave this purgatory and try fleeing back to the Night Court but I’d feel weak the instant a paw crossed the line. Sometimes a demon or a creature of Fae would tell me what is going on in the Royal Family. That’s how I know,” the sphinx growled with a rather smug look on her face.
“How about we get you back to normal?” November offered.
“Only a blood relative of the Royal Family can do that,” she spoke, flashing a glance at me before she crawled back into her home. Without a goodbye, we left the creature to feed upon her own sorrowful pity. “How are we going to find a blood member?” I asked.
“We could ask the Lord of the Day Court,” November replied.
I had a hard time sleeping that night. It was hard to believe that those Greek Gods I learned about as a child were real. I try to keep an open mind, but all I could think about was what was really real and what was really false. Maybe it’s best if I try not to think too hard on things, I thought before I finally fell asleep.
In the morning, we finished off most of our food, having only a full bag of water left. We continued our travels, spotting a few signs that we were closer to the Day Court. A few times we’d stop for a few minutes at the patches of lush, green grass to let the camel graze. We even saw some exotic birds flying around. The scorching temperature had also gradually went down to a very comfortable temperature. “Are we there yet?” I shouted like an impatient child.
“Almost,” November replied. I slid off the camel and began to run. “Wait up!” November shouted, mounting the camel. I never knew camels could run. I always saw them being lazy or walking. “It’s dangerous to run off on your own!” November shouted as he rode next to me.
“I’m sorry, I got excited,” I said as I gasped for air. November dismounted the camel and wrapped an arm around my waist. “Are there yet?” I asked teasingly. He kissed my forehead and smiled. “Yes, Rei, we are,” he answered.

Each step we took was carefully made so that we didn’t trigger an alarm. A few of them were very close calls; either I’d stumble or November would accidentally kick a rock. When such a noise would be created, November and I would freeze like deer staring in the headlights of a car. After ten minutes of standing still, our hearts would make a loud thud against our chests and we’d continue walking. Then one creature that was a horse-like skeleton galloped towards us and stopped seven feet away. I looked behind us, sensing something unpleasant and saw three dusty mounds that were only two feet away. Each mound had two glowing red eyes that gave me the chills. “Have we been spotted?” I whispered.
“Just keep still, Rei,” November replied. I looked at our feet and saw two glowing eyes and a Cheshire cat grin. “Holy!” I exclaimed, taking a quick step back. November looked down and his eyes widened before he leapt away. “What the…” he spat. The creature rose from the ground, shaking the dirt from off of its fur. Its overly sized wolf-like body frightened me. I noticed the other creatures around us backed away as if this one was the leader. The dagger, I thought. I reached for it and held it in its face. The creature opened its large mouth and laughed before swatting the dagger out of my hand with its bear-sized paw. I turned to run for the dagger until a thin, long rat tail wrapped around my waist, pulling me away. It held me ten feet in the air with its tail as November ran for the dagger. “Gah!” November shouted as the creature extended its neck so that it could snap at him.
“Put me down!” I screamed, digging my nails into its tail. The creature looked up at me as the corner of its mouth curled into a wicked grin, quickly bringing its tail down, throwing me into the ground. “Rei!” November shouted, his quick footsteps came towards me. He placed a firm, yet gentle hand on my shoulder. “Are you ok?” he shouted. I coughed as I tried to look up at him. “My body hurts,” I groaned, every inch of my body pulsing in pain from being plunged into the ground. The creature laughed, amused by my pain.
“You bastard,” November growled as he picked up the dagger. Suddenly, the dagger began to glow with a beautiful, blinding white aura and then grew into a magnificent sword. The creature sat up, showing a toothy grin. “I have a message for that bitch you call a queen,” November paused, his body changing. His eyes and hair turned a moon-white colour and white angel wings shot out of his back. I rolled onto my side and saw the expression on the creature’s face. It instantly went from entertained to shock. “Tell her that she should be afraid of the dark and the light!” he added. November’s wing began to flap, sending him into the air. He raised his sword and slashed at the creature at every angle before cutting its head off.
When I thought we were safe for now, I slowly sat up and saw a miniature version of the creature running towards me. “No!” I shouted, covering my face with my arms.
“Let’s go before the rest come for us too,” November spoke calmly, flinging the bloody corpse onto the ground. I reached towards November and then suddenly blacked out from the abuse done to my body.

                             ***************

“Rei…wake up,” I heard November’s voice echo. I searched for November but the black fog was clouding me from seeing. Where are you? I felt so alone with November in this dreadful place. Hearing his voice wasn’t enough. I wanted to feel the comfort of his embrace and feel his soft breathing against my skin. “I’m here…Rei…you need to open your eyes,” I heard his voice call out.
Open my eyes? But they are open. It’s dark here. I made my way through the darkness, going nowhere. “Open your eyes child!” an old woman’s voice shouted.
  How?
“Just open them! How else would someone open their eyes?” the voice spoke again.
I’ll try. I bit my lip and thought about my eyes fluttering open like the delicate flapping wings of a butterfly. Then, I found myself surrounded by thousands of colourful butterflies. “Awake,” an angelic voice echoed. My eyes flew open, seeing November staring into a cup. I looked around, seeing that we were in a small, dusty cabin. “Where are we?” I asked, sitting up, my body sore and bruised. November dropped his cup, water splashing on the hard floor. “You opened your eyes,” he cried as he threw his arms around me, pressing into my bruises.
“Yea, what’s the big deal?” I asked as I grunted in pain.
“What’s the big deal?! You’ve been out cold for a week or so. This young man was wandering in the In Between for a few days before I found him,” an old woman said.
“We finally got out of the Night Court?” I questioned.
“You’re lucky to have escaped with some broken bones and huge bruises that seem to cover your whole body,” she answered, changing a bandage on my left leg.
“This is Jena and she says that we need to stay here till our bodies heal. You, sadly, got the worst end of it,” November said. The old woman named Jena propped up my pillows so that I can comfortably sit. “I don’t have much food since this is a desert. Thankfully, my house is built on an underground oasis, so I have plenty of fresh water,” she said as I leaned back, into the pillows. Jena grabbed a cup out of the cupboard and dipped it in a bucket. “Here. It’ll help you regain the strength to take you to where you’re going,” she added as she handed me the cup. I accepted the cup and drank the crisp, cold water. November kissed my forehead and then sat back in the wooden chair next to the bed. “So how long have you lived here and are you alone?” I asked. A smile came across Jena’s face. “I’ve been here too long and I do get lonely. Sometimes I’ll get lost travelers. I take them in and I never see them again,” she said.
“I’m sorry,” I replied. Jena shook her head. “Don’t be. I help them and they give me some company for a little while. It’s a fair trade to me,” she said, her wrinkled grin still leaking out a hint of loneliness. Then she opened a door and walked through it. “Where is she going?” I questioned.
“Jena lives in that room. She says that no one is allowed to see it. I went through the door to see what’s in there, but it was just blackness,” November answered as I took a drink of the cold water Jena gave me.

                             ***************

The next day, I woke to a silent room with harsh sunlight showing through the windows. “How are you feeling, Rei?” November asked, getting up from the padded mat he was sleeping on. I moved my legs a bit, still feeling sore. Then I tried to stand. My bones ached but the pain wasn’t unbearable. “I think I’m fine. That water works wonders,” I answered. I sat down and noticed Jena wasn’t back yet. “How long does Jena usually stay in her room?” I questioned.
“Um, she should be back soon,” November replied. He rolled up the mat and picked up two empty cups. Then he dipped the cups in the bucket of water, giving me one of the cups. “Morning,” Jena said, slipping through the door to her room.
“Morning,” November and I replied at the same time.
“You’re doing better I see. You’re body heals quickly then. Well, I guess it must be time for you to leave. After you finish your drinks, outside is a camel and supplies that will last you three days,” Jena said before disappearing back into her room.
We took our time to gather ourselves and finish our drinks. November took my hand and helped me to the door. I turned to look behind us, and the dusty cabin had become empty and broken down as if it hadn’t been used in years. “Let’s go,” November whispered. We exited the cabin and the world around us appeared brighter than the sun. I shut my eyes tight to keep the light out of my eyes. “I now know what it’s like to be a vampire,” I giggled. November chuckled and wrapped an arm around me.
“Hold onto me and I’ll help you to the camel. I still think you should stay off your feet for awhile,” November said. I clutched onto his side and we walked forward a few paces. Then things got dark and I opened my eyes. “Oh, thank you Jena,” I mumbled, tugging on the hood of the cape November had put on me. He then picked me up with ease and placed me on the back of the camel. I peeked out from under the hood and watched November pull on the rope around the camel, feeling the camel’s muscles flex as it began to follow him.

Our adventure north was a long and painful one. Every little thing from the plants to the creatures showed how wicked the Lady was. A few hours into our ride, a pathetic looking changeling stopped us. Her long, messy, spaghetti-like hair hung over her face, concealing her big black eyes. The gnarled tree she was perched on groaned as her razor sharp nails dug into the bark. “So, you two have finally returned?  Maybe I can finally get my revenge on that woman,” she growled, her voice sounding like a psychopath‘s tone.
“Huh?” I questioned, confused by her words. The changeling shifted her position, dangling her long, bony legs off the branch, revealing deep scars in her flesh. “I used to be a slave. The work was tough and caused my wings to tear and become obsolete. One day, the Lady offered my freedom,” she paused to stare off into nothingness.
“Ok,” I muttered. The changeling growled and looked away. “When the Lady offers freedom to a slave, there’s a price. Usually you have to give up what is dearest to you in order to gain freedom. If you refuse to give it up, you stay a slave and she wins. If you give it up, you get freedom but the rest of your life is meaningless and she still wins. When she offered my freedom, she wanted me to kill my brother,” she explained, moving her hands wildly as she spoke. I gasped, bringing my hand up to cover my mouth in shock. “What next?” November asked.
“I killed him but I did it to save him. You see, he too was a slave. I remember him going delirious and saying that Haematite and Chrysoprase will return. He would go on about how they would rid of the Lady and bring balance back to our world. I loved my brother, I did,” the changeling answered before rambling on to incoherent grumbles.
“Don’t worry, we’ll find Haematite and Chrysoprase,” I said. The changeling looked at me, tilting her head and then laughed. “I doubt they even exist. Even if they did, the Lady would kill them immediately,” she replied.
“Who is the Lady?” November asked, his voice calm as he ignored the creature‘s psychotic laughter.
“She is pure evil,” the changeling answered, her expression instantly switching to serious. “You better keep heading north and hope she doesn’t find you.” The black unicorn snorted and we continued north.
Another being we ran into was a hornless phooka. He was perked on a stump in front of an underground cottage made from a hollowed tree. When he saw us get near him, he snorted angrily. The unicorn instantly stopped, cautious of the goat-like faerie. “Excuse me, may we pass?” I asked as I watch the phooka pick out a pebble from his left hoof. He beamed a glare at me and scratched his chin. “It doesn’t matter where you run, She will find you,” he snorted. He leaped off his stump and grunted, touching the greenish stubs on his head. “Us phooka aren’t friendly like hobgoblins but we aren’t like kelpies. Me and my brothers fought back but those demons that lurk the border came after us. She took us as slaves, but she decided to let me go,” he spoke, his fists shaking. This creature seemed like the Lady took more than just his horns.
“We are traveling north so that we may meet with the Day Court’s Lord and fix things,” November said. The phooka snorted and sat back on the stump. “Good luck,” he growled, turning away from us. The black unicorn’s ears perked up as we continued our quest.
As the unicorn began to tire, we stopped to rest up. November fed the unicorn some food from the bag he’s been carrying as I took a little walk to stretch out my sore legs. I gazed into the dark sky and reflected on all that has happened so far. “Hey! Rei! Are you ok?” November shouted, catching up to me.
“Yea, I’m ok. My butt is really sore, that’s all,” I said with a chuckle. November looked at me as if he could see how I really felt, scared. He embraced me, caressing my forehead with his soft, plump lips. “We’ll get through this together. This is a very odd first date, I’d admit,” November paused to chuckle. “Anyway, after we find Haematite and Chrysoprase, I’ll find a way for us to go home. Even if I have to shake the information out of that furry.” I took a deep breath and November released me from his hold. “So what do you think this Lady is like?” I questioned. He shrugged his shoulders and wrapped a long, strong arm around me. Oh how much I loved the thought of being in his arms. They were slender, long, and well toned. I remember when he came in to audition for NOIR. He was just another cute Asian from the picture he sent us with his application. Once I saw those long arms strum his bass guitar, I prayed he was a prince so that he could sweep me from off my feet like in some sort of faerie tale.
“Are you hungry?” November asked, snapping me out of La-La Land. He held a chicken leg and a buttered roll. “No thanks. I haven’t been hungry since we got here,” I answered.
“Same here. It‘s probably from all the chaos distracting us from our hunger,” he replied as he gave the last of our food to the unicorn, who happily devoured the food. We sat in a patch dead grass as the black unicorn crunched on the chicken bones. I pulled out the dagger Aphelia gave me. “What’s with that?” November asked.
“Aphelia said I’m going to need this,” I answered. November touched the blood stained blade. “It looks like its last owner didn’t take good care of it,” he commented, pointing out the faint bloodstains on the blade.
“The current Lady used it to kill her sister,” a male voice spoke. November and I looked at the black unicorn who was staring at us. “What?” we questioned the unicorn at the same time.
“I saw it. Lady Rhodonite was telling Lou something. When he flew away, Lady Krystallos was holding that dagger and stabbed her sister in the heart. The balance disappeared, I could feel it in my breast,” the black unicorn snorted.
“Do you remember what Rhodonite was telling Lou?” I asked. The unicorn shook his large head. “No, I was very young then. I have forgotten much as I grow older and closer to my death,” he answered. I stood from my spot and walked towards the unicorn. My hand went up to touch his muzzle, causing him to flinch but quickly regrouped, welcoming the soothing touch. “Oh, Haematite…” I heard the black unicorn whisper.
“Wait! What did you say?” I questioned, retrieving my hand. The unicorn snorted and stomped his hoof. “Come on, Rei. We got a few more days till we get to the In Between,” November said. I put the dagger back on my belt loop and November helped me onto the unicorn’s back. Then he climbed on behind me. The black unicorn snorted again and began to gallop north.

                             ***************

A couple more days of traveling passed, the sky began to change from black to gray. From the lack of eating, my body grew tired and weak. I knew November was feeling the same way, but he didn’t want me to see him weak. The unicorn began to slow to a walk. “This area is a little dangerous, so I must walk for your safety,” he spoke. I sighed and leaned back onto November’s chest. “November, do you feel that our destinies are intertwined?” I questioned, knowing that what I had said was the cheesiest and most cliché thing to ask.
“What do you mean?” he replied.
“Like, do you feel like there’s a greater reason why our paths crossed?” I reworded. November wrapped an arm around me, pulling me closer to him. “Of course I do. Everything happens for a reason,” he answered.
“I see. Before we met, I had odd dreams about us. It’d start off with me in the shadows and I’d see someone in the distance. Each time I had the dream, the person would get clearer and clearer. On the day before we met, I saw you clearly,” I explained.
“Odd, me too. In the dream, I was in love with that beautiful woman in the shadows and I had to tell her, but I’d wake up before I could. On the day of my audition to join NOIR, it took every inch of my body not to reach out and hold you tight,” November added. A pale blush came across my face as I thought of him as a real prince.
“So why is this area dangerous?” November asked the unicorn.
“The demons lurk around here. They are very sensitive to vibrations. If I were to gallop, they’d attack and take us to the Lady. I saw what they did to a Scarecrow. The poor creature, they silently attacked him from below. I was surprised that he wasn’t burned alive. Instead, the Lady placed a curse on him that makes him bleed from the pores of his skin,” the unicorn explained, his ears flicked back. He then stopped and pointed his horn to the side. “See that skeleton creature over there? That’s one of them. Their sight and hearing is very poor. They can’t smell, so you could walk right passed one and they won’t notice. Now there’s another one that lives in the earth. You could walk on one and never know it. Now this is as far as I’m willing to go. I’d gladly take you further, but it’s risky. If you ever do come across one of the demons, show them that dagger. The energy in the dagger will force them away.
November dismounted the unicorn and then helped me down. We took a few steps forward and turned to thank the black unicorn, but he was already gone.

This was the Night Court indeed. The sky was black and the ground was dead and dry. Even the plants that grew out of the ground seemed lifeless as the stuck out of the dirt like a stick in the sand. “Why did you bring us here?” November asked. The little creature turned, a grim look switched on his little face. “The current Lady of the Night Court is a horrible person. The kingdom has been like this ever since she was crowned. She turned all the beings here into her slaves. There are rumors that she’s going to kill the Lord of the Day Court and take over. Some beings fled this place to the Human Realm and are in hiding,” Lou explained.
“Why are you here?” I asked, trying to comprehend what the creature said.
“I’m a knight, so I’m bound here. I can go to the Human Realm, but I can only linger by the gate and no further. If the Lady were to cut me free, I could leave this horrible place and live among the humans. Sadly, she’ll never do that unless I give her something precious to me,” he said, his tortured eyes making my heart feel like it’s breaking. Lou lightly tugged on his ears and then smiled as if nothing was wrong. “Follow me and bring that human food you’re holding,” he added.
The little wings on Lou’s back began to flap, fluttering into mid air. November held my hand as we followed Lou through the black wasteland. “It’s amazing that there’s still some light in this depressing place. I wonder where it’s coming from. I don’t see a sun,” I thought out loud.
“It’s a false light that the Fae have created. They did this to provide light for those who rely on their eye sight,” Lou explained without turning around.
As we traveled further away from the gate we saw some very unusual things and some very mystical things. One thing we saw were some black unicorns feeding on the dead grass. The larger one in the group looked at us as we went by, its black eyes watching us intensely. “That unicorn is staring at us,” I muttered. Lou fluttered to the bag I was holding. He fished around and pulled out a chicken leg and a roll, tossing the food to the unicorns. The unicorns sniffed the food and began to eat the roll and chicken.
“That should do it, now let’s keep going,” Lou said and kept going the same direction he’s been leading us in.
We passed the black unicorns and came close to a few poorly built huts. “Who lives here?” November asked.
“One is abandoned, but an old, blind woman lives in the other,” Lou answered. The bizarre thing I noticed about the huts, one was glowing inside as if there was a small fire burning and I could see some movement coming from inside, the other was dark like the sky. Lou stopped in front of the dark one. He landed, opened the door, and entered. I stopped in front of the door, but November pushed me inside before I could ask questions.
Suddenly the door closed and there was light. “Wait, what’s going on?” I asked, scratching my head in confusion. Lou sat down in a wicker chair that appeared to deteriorating. “What do you mean?” he questioned.
“I thought this was the abandon house since it was dark,” I said, completely baffled. A cloaked dwarf poked out from between November and me. “It’s a spell to keep the unwanted out,” she grumbled as she sat on a stool next to Lou. The dwarf woman looked up at us, her eye sockets empty. “My god!” I gasped, my hand rising to cover my mouth.
“How rude! Haven’t you seen a blind dwarf before?” she snapped, waving her cane towards us.
“Sorry, I’ve never seen eyeless sockets before,” I apologized, trying to take my eyes off the bizarre sight. The woman shook her head and then began to sniff the air. “Something smells sweet. Give it to me!” she ordered as she stomped her cane. November stuck a hand in his bag and pulled out a cup of cinnamon apples. Lou took it from him and gave it to the dwarf woman. “Oh, it’s still warm, very hard to get warm sweets around here,” she muttered, licking her wrinkled, thin lips. She peeled off the lid and threw it into the fire. Then a fat, long tongue slithered out of her mouth, licked up the apples, and gobbled them down in one lick. “Um, excuse me. Sorry, but we don’t know your name,” I asked as November and I watched her lick the cup dry.
“Well, since you gave me such a fine meal, you deserve to know it. My name is Aphelia,” she answered, stressing the A. Lou smiled at me as if he were trying to tell me that it was now his turn to do the talking.
“Aphelia, these two are here to get rid of the Lady and bring peace to the Night Court,” Lou explained. Aphelia’s brow rose at the sound of Lou’s voice. “Lou? How long has it been? Three? Six? Ten years? Have you been a good boy?” she asked as her left hand searched the air till it touched the top of his soft head.
“Aphelia, did you hear me?” he questioned. The dwarf woman frowned and began to chuckle. “Of course I did. I remember hearing from the Fae something about humans, but these two humans have the auras of Haematite and Chrysoprase?” she questioned, her expression appeared as confusion.
“But they disappeared a billion years ago,” Lou muttered in Aphelia’s ear, however, his words were still loud enough for us to hear. She then stood and looked up at us, tears rolling out of her sockets and down her cheeks. “Look, we need to go,” Lou said as he fluttered towards the door.
“Fine, whatever. Please, you two go north to the Day Court. While their Lord is still alive, She can’t touch you,” Aphelia spoke, frustration and despair lingered in her voice.
“Thank you,” I replied, giving her the cinnamon apples out of my bag. The old, gloom look on Aphelia’s face brightened up as the warm sweet smell floated into her nose, almost making her cry in joy. She reached into the pocket of her cloak and gave me an object wrapped in leather. “You’ll need this,” she whispered.
  “What is it?” I asked.
“It’s a very special dagger,” she answered before turning away. I took the dagger and left the hut.
“So Lou, how to we get to the Day Court?” November asked.
“Go north, of course. It’ll take you a week or so by foot. Then you have to get passed the In Between,” Lou answered.
“How many days will it take if we ride them?” I asked, pointing at the black unicorns who appeared to follow us to the huts.
“It should take no more than about four days or even less, but I doubt they will let you ride them,” Lou replied. I tied the dagger to a belt loop on my skinny jeans and walked up to the unicorns. “Hey, you guys mind helping us out?” I asked. The largest looked at me for a few minutes and then nodded his head. “Hey! This one will give us a ride!” I shouted. November and Lou came towards me. “Just to warn you, they won’t take you all the way there. They will only take you to the In Between,” Lou warned after a few silent seconds, as if the unicorn had told him the conditions.
“That’s fine with me,” I replied feeling a tug on the bag I was holding. I looked over to see a smaller black unicorn stick its nose into the bag. “Here, have the whole loot,” I said, setting the bag on the ground. Normally I wouldn’t litter, but as strange and dead this place was, I doubt it would matter.
“Come on, let’s go,” November spoke, holding his hand out to me. I placed my foot in his hand and he lifted me onto the back of the largest unicorn. Then he climbed on behind me. “Are you coming with us, Lou?” I asked.
“I told you. I’m bound to the Night Court. Well, until we meet again,” Lou said and then he flew away. We watched him fly off till he blended in with the black sky.
“Ok, north we go!” I cheerfully exclaimed. The unicorn reared up, feeling my excitement, and began to gallop north.

Rei! Your mom isn't doing well. She's awake right now and wants to talk to you. Minx's words echoed in my head as I pleaded that this was all a lie. "Miss! Please no running!" a nurse yelled at me as I ran passed her. I didn't listen and kept going. "Mom!" I cried as I ran into her room and to the chair by her bed. My mom sat up and looked at me with a smile. "I'm not dead yet sweetie, so calm down," she said with a giggle. Tears streaked my cheeks from the fear of loosing the one woman who treated me like her own child. Just seeing her connected to all sorts of plastic tubes made my heart ache. "Here's a tissue," she added, handing me a box of tissues. I accepted the box and pulled out a tissue to dry my tears with. "Now, while we wait for that unreliable doctor to come back, let's have a talk," she said.
"Ok," I mumbled with a sniffle. My mom smiled and kissed my forehead. "Now you know I have about a few days to a week left to live. Well, technically we're all dying, some faster than others," she trailed off. "Anyway, please don't cry. I'm relieved and excited that I'm about to die. The medicine I've been taking has, yes, helped me live longer, but the pain was still there. You know, I'm glad I got to see you and your friends before I go, so I'm happy and I'm ready," she said. We sat together in silent for a while until my mom giggled. "November is quite the gentleman. You should take a chance on him." I blushed and gave her a gentle hug. "Thank you, mom. Now one more-," I began before the doctor interrupted me.
"Good to see you looking well, Mrs. Willow," the doctor said as he looked at my mom's charts. Then he noticed me. "I'm sorry miss, could you please leave the room," he asked.
"No! This is my daughter, Rei and she will stay right here. Now continue with what bull crap is about to utter out of that mouth of yours," my mom snapped. He looked at her in disbelief and speechless. I had to bite my lip to keep from laughing at his expression. "Look, I'm ready to die, so your next words better not have anything to do with forcing me to live longer or get out of this room before I shove this I.V. up your ass!" she growled, reaching up to grab the sack of fluid. I moved around in my seat when a little snort came out as I dared not to laugh. The doctor sighed and left the room, coming back with a pad of paper and a pen. "Do you have a Will?" he asked.
"Of course I do! I have copy at home and a copy in my purse," she said. The doctor nodded his head. "Then I will try to make you feel as comfortable as possible," he added before leaving. I stood from the chair and back towards the door. "We have your purse. I'll have Minx bring it to you," I paused, my hand on the doorknob. "I'll try to visit you again. If I don't, will you hate me?"
"No, you're my baby girl. Now go have fun with your life. Besides, it hurts to see your sad eyes looking at my condition," she answered. I hugged her one last time and left the room to join the others.
"How'd it go?" Minx asked. I pulled a fake smile on my face. "She's fine. You should have heard her tell off the doctor," I said.
  "That's good," Haden muttered.
"Oh! My mom wants her purse," I added. Lil stood from her chair, holding my mom's purse and then leaving the room to give it to her.
That's right! November, I thought, remembering his touches before Minx walked in. I slowly walked towards him. "Hey," he said, a warm smile on his lips. Oh, how much I wanted to caress those lips. I walked closer to him and then Lil quickly came back in the room. "Navi, she wants to speak with you too," she said. November looked at me and then at his sister before making his exit.
It was only about ten minutes before he came back. He wrapped a warm, long arm around me and kissed the top of my head. "What now?" Haden asked.
"Well, I want to take Rei out. Too much grieving is no good. Lil and I were taught to celebrate the loved one's life and look at the pleasant memories," November said.
"Oh? Where are we going?" Lil asked. November shook his head. "I said I'm only taking Rei with me," he replied. Minx, Haden, and Lil looked at each other in relief. "It's about time," Lil and Minx said at the same time. They obviously thought he asked me out on a date.
We went to Haden's van and we went back home. "What time will you be back?" Minx asked.
  "I'll call," November answered.
"Ok, you two be safe," Minx said.
"Don't worry, I'll call a bus to take me home," Lil said. November and I said our goodbyes and then left in his car. November pulled out and drove off. "Where are we going?" I asked.
"Well first, I want to pick up a few things and then I want to take you to my favorite spot," he said. November drove up to a Boston Market and came back a few minutes later with a few bags. "A picnic?" I questioned.
"You'll see. We just have about ten more minutes to go," he said. I looked out the car window and noticed that the sun was setting. "How long were we at that hospital?" I asked.
"Several hours or so. I'm not sure. The days are getting shorter as it gets closer to Winter Solstice," he said. That's right, Christmas is coming up in a few months, I thought, a gloom look appearing on my face. "Don't look so sad," November spoke as he parked his car.
"Why? I just realized that this year will be my first Christmas without my mom. Even though we usually don't speak, she'll give me a call and say 'I love you, Merry Christmas. Did you get the package I sent?' But this year, I won't get that. I know my mom wants me happy, but it sucks to know that she'll be gone for good this time," I said. November reached over told hold me in his arms. "I know how you feel. Well, I don't, but she'll always be in your heart and don't forget that," he said as he pulled away.
"What did she tell you?" I asked. November sat quickly for awhile before answering. "She asked me to take care of you," he answered. Then he reached to the back seats and grabbed the Boston Market bags. "Hungry?" he asked.
We got out of the car and walked up a hill to an iron fence. He handed me the bags and removed a few bars in the fence. "My secret entrance," November said and then he stepped through the wide opening. I followed him and then he replaced the bars. "So where are we?" I asked.
"Sweet Hill Cemetery, which is a bizarre name for a graveyard," he answered. We continued up the hill and behind a few huge tombstones. "Sit," November said as he sat on a grave. I sat next to him, feeling weird about sitting on someone's grave. "Don't worry, this is my grandma's grave. She won't mind if we eat here," he said as if he read my thoughts. November smiled and took one bag from me. I began to go through the bag until I noticed how beautiful the setting sun looked from November's grandma's grave. "I see why this is your favorite spot," I said. He smiled at me and caressed my hair with his hand. "Do you want to start dating?" he asked, his voice filled with care. I blushed and nodded my head. "I'm glad," he whispered as he reached over to kiss me.
Squeak! November and I broke away from our kiss to see a bat circling above us. "This is a bizarre sight," I mumbled.
"It is! The sun hasn't fully set and it's getting too cold for bats. This one probably has rabies. Grab your bag and let's go," November agreed. I reached for my bag and stood, but the bat flew in front of us as if it refused to let us leave. "I've never heard of guard bats," I muttered.
"But I am one," a childish voice said. I turned and saw nothing. "No one is behind you," the voice said. Feeling baffled, I turned to face a childish figure with big, fuzzy ears. "Where'd the bat go?" I questioned.
"He is the bat," November said. I leaned over and sniffed the kid. "Wait, you're that kid who delivered the locket," I said when I noticed that he smelt like fruit.
"Of course I am! My name is Lou and I'm actually a knight, not a guard. Now follow me," he said. Lou walked over to a tomb and opened the gate. "Follow!" he said again. November and I followed Lou passed the gate. On the other site, I expected to see a rotting corpse, but it appeared that the gate was a portal to a different realm or something like that. Everything was dark, depressing, and lifeless. "Where are we?" November asked. Lou looked at us with a smile. "The Night Court, of course!" Lou giggled.

I woke the next day to the sound of a bell chime. 6:40? It's too early for the church bells, I thought, after taking a glance at the clock by my bed. The bell chimed again. I sat up in my bed to investigate and then the phone rang. "Hello?" I answered, pressing the receiver to my ear. There was no reply on the other line. "Hello?" I questioned, but still, no reply. I began to put the receiver back into its cradle until I heard a scream coming from the other line. "The Kingdom!" the voice screeched before a dial tone buzzed softly from the receiver. I placed the receiver into its cradle and the bell chimed once more. The chime sounded like it was coming from beside me, so I quickly turned to see a bone-thin being about a few feet away from me. The being shrieked, blood oozing out of its pores, its dead black eyes pierced into mine. Oh, what a terrible sight this thing was. "What are you?" I asked, my eyes wide with fear, my body trembling.
"Please come back to us! You must reclaim your place in the Night Court and free the slaves. First, you must destroy Her," it said before disappearing, leaving no trace that it was in my room.
"Who are you talking to?" Minx asked. I turned to see Minx standing in the doorway, brushing her teeth. "It must of scared the shit outa ya too," she added, the toothbrush in her mouth as she talked.
"It's nothing. I was having an odd dream and I woke up, thinking I saw a monster in the middle of my room," I stammered. Minx shrugged her shoulders and left my room. "What's up?" I immediately heard Haden whisper.
"I think she's going crazy or some bizarre shit's going down," Minx answered quietly. I puffed up my cheeks, peeved at what Minx said. Then I remembered that my mom wanted to meet November and Lil, so I picked up the receiver and dialed their house number. "Hello?" November mumbled on the other line, obvious that the phone woke him up.
"Hey, this is Rei. When are you coming over?" I asked. I heard November take a deep breath. "We'll be over in a bit. Lil is in the shower," he answered.
"Ok, we'll see you in a little bit, bye," I said and then hung up.
When November and Lil came over my mom got a weird look in her eyes. "What's wrong?" I asked. She shook her head. "Nothing," she muttered. I decided to let it go for now. Then Haden walked into the room, breaking the brief silence. "Coffee?" he asked.
"Sure!" Lil cheerfully answered, walking into the kitchen. My mom gave me that 'I'll-leave-you-two-alone' glance and followed Lil. "November, have you heard or seen anything weird lately. I don't mean on the news because most of that stuff, the government covers it up," I said.
"Yes, I saw pixies in my room this morning, but only for a second. Why you ask?" he questioned. I bit my lip, the image of that being popping into my mind. "I woke up to a bell chiming, but it wasn't the church bells. Then the phone rang and it was a loud screaming. The next part was freaky. I saw this being in the middle of my room. It was covered in blood, so it was hard to note any features. All I saw were these black eyes. Anyway, it said something about a kingdom and Her," I quietly said, emphasizing the word 'her'.
"Who's Her?" he asked. I shrugged my shoulders. "I don't know," I said.
"What are you two talking about?" Minx asked. I perked up, turning around. "I will tell you later," I answered. Minx rolled her eyes. "Whatever. Anyway, your mom wants you two to come join us," she said. A little smirk crawled across my face as November and I joined everyone in the kitchen. "So what were you two lovebirds talking about?" my mom teased, holding a cup of coffee under her nose. My eyes widened and my cheeks grew warm with a light blush. "Love?! November and I aren't dating! We were just having a casual conversation, that's all," I said, my hands clutching my cheeks like a lovesick girl in some sort of girly, romance manga Haden forced me to read. Lil shook her head and chucked. Out of all of my friends, she's the only one who knew about my crush on November. It's not a big deal or anything; I know he likes me, but I've never really had genuine feelings for someone until now.
"Anyway, is there anywhere to go? Anything to do?" my mom asked, breaking the awkwardness between us.
"Well, there's the mall or our favorite store to hangout at, World Market. Most of our stuff in this apartment came from there. It was rather expensive, however, but totally worth it," I answered. My mom shook her head. "No, I meant museums," she said. We all, except my mom, looked at each other and began laughing. "What's so funny?"
"If you want to see those, you'd have to travel hours away for that. All that there is here are shopping centers, liquor stores, a few bars, car crashes, and drug dealers," Minx said.
"Don't forget about hobos. They usually hang out at the train station though," Haden added.
"But this isn't Chicago," my mom replied.
"It sort of is, except minus the gangs, tall buildings, add the hundreds of illegal immigrants that cross the border and you get this town," Lil said with a funny looking smirk on her face.
"AKA Lil' Mexico," November added, causing Minx to burst out into laughter. My mom looked at us in frustration, placing her empty cup in the sink. "Then why are you living here?" she asked.
"The rent is cheap," Haden muttered. The room went quiet. "Well, there's a forest preserve but with your condition, I doubt you'd want to go," I said.
"Nonsense! We'll go," my mom snapped as she walked out of the kitchen. I bit my lip, a bad feeling running up my spine. This feeling felt intense; my stomach twisted, telling me that we shouldn't go. "Come on! Let's go!" my mom yelled. I sighed and we left in Haden's mini van.
After we passed slow, morning traffic, we made it to the forest preserve. "It's beautiful," my mom sighed; inhaling what she thought was 'fresh' air. From the corner of my eye, I saw Haden open his mouth to make a comment, but Minx stopped him before he could ruin my mom's moment. "Well, shall we?"
November asked, offering to hold my mom's hand as we gingerly walked down a very steep hill.
"It's very nice to see land that isn't crowded with houses," she said with a smile. It was the first time my mom looked so peaceful. The way the wind blew through her long locks made her look like some sort of goddess. If I knew that was going to be the last moment I saw her look 'alive', I would of taken a picture of her, so that she'd look that angelic for eternity.
"I feel tired," my mom mumbled, leaning on November's shoulder. My heart stopped for a second, scared that the one woman I called mother for years would have to go to the hospital. November helped her sit onto a bench. "Are you ok?" I asked. November cradled my mom's weak body in his arms. "We need to get some help. She passed out," November said, worry in his eyes. Haden and Minx ran off to the ranger's cabin to get help. I opened a water bottle I was carrying. "Lay her down on the bench. Now hold her head up so that I can get some water in her," I said. November did as I said and I slowly began to dribble water into her mouth, taking a few minutes to pause so she could breath. I continued to keep her hydrated till Minx and Haden come back with the paramedics. One of them placed her into a stretcher and strapped her down. "Are you her daughter?" one paramedic asked me.
  "Yes," I answered.
"Would you like to ride with us?" he asked. I bit my lip and then shook my head. "No, it's ok," I answered. He shrugged his shoulders and closed the doors on the ambulance. Before they left, the authorized us to follow them to the hospital and stay in the waiting room. "This is my fault. I shouldn't of asked her to come here. It's my fault," I mumbled, cradling my face in my palms.
"No it isn't. This could of happened when she was at her house," Minx whispered, placing her hands on my shoulders, pulling me into a hug. Tears ran down my cheeks as I allowed Minx to hold me. She broke away and then kissed my forehead. "I'm gonna go talk to the doctor and find out if she's ok. You stay here and calm down," Minx said, wiping away the black lines of make-up and tears with a rough textured tissue hospitals and clinics provide. Minx stood and left the room to hunt down a doctor. Then a warm, gentle arm wrapped around me. "I want to take care of you for now on," I heard November whisper in my ear, his warm breath tickling my neck. It felt good to be held by him. Did Lil tell him that I also like him? I thought.
I turned to see Lil looking at with those eyes that read 'Go for it!' She winked and I turned away to face November. As my mouth opened to say something, Minx rushed in. "Rei! Your mom isn't doing well. She's awake right now and wants to talk to you," she said, panting from running back to the waiting room. I pushed November away and followed Minx to my mom's room.

After November dropped us off and after he walked us to the apartment door, I noticed something shiny hanging off the doorknob. "What's that?" Minx asked. It appeared to be an old locket. "Excuse me, did you see who left this?" I asked a neighbor as she exited the front door to her home.
"No, but maybe Pedro knows. He was telling me about a strange child. Wait here," she said, entering her home. A few minutes later, a young looking Latino exited the door. "You had a question?" he asked, his accent very strong.
"Si, usted vio a la persona que dejó esto?" Minx asked as I showed him the locket. He looked at it and then a weird look crawled across his face. "Había este muchacho, tan extraño. Él tenía oídos grandes y olido como la fruta," he answered. Minx turned to me to meet my confused expression. "He said he saw a weird looking boy with big ears and he smelt like fruit," she translated.
"Gracias," Minx and I said together. Pedro nodded his head and went back into his home. Minx and I entered our home, curious about our visitor. "Haden," Minx called. Haden walked out of his room and came to greet us. "Did you have fun?" he asked after giving Minx a quick kiss on the cheek. While Haden and Minx were getting affectionate with each other, I walked into my room, plopped onto my bed, and opened the locket. Inside of the locket was a picture of a very beautiful woman with features that are similar to mine. "Oh yea! The locket! What's in it?" Minx asked, breaking away from Haden's embrace.
"It's a picture," I answered, handing the locket to her.
"She looks kinda like you," Haden said, looking over Minx's shoulder. Minx nodded her head. "I agree! Is she a relative?" she asked. I shrugged my shoulders. "Who knows? Haden, does she look familiar?" I asked.
"No," he answered. Minx handed the locket back to me and then I set it on the side table, next to my bed. "Oh! By the way, did you see a weird looking kid with big ears and who smelt like fruit?" I asked Haden.
"A weird kid…I do remember smelling the strong scent of fruit and hearing taps at the door. However, I didn't see anything, sorry," Haden said.
  "Ok, thanks."
"But if I see this kid, I'll let you know."
Haden and Minx left my room and into the room they shared. Then, my eyes glanced back at the locket. The picture looked nothing like my mom or Haden's mom either. In fact, I have zero features that are similar to my mom's features. Geez, I haven't talked to mom in a long time. Maybe I should give her a call, I thought, my gaze locked on the phone. My fingertips danced on the receiver, deciding if I should call or not. Then I finally picked up the receiver and dialed my mom's house number. The phone rang once, twice, and then someone picked up. "Hello?" my mom's voice spoke from the other end.
"Hey mom, it's me, Rei," I answered. There was a few second paused that seemed to drag for a long time. "Hello, Rei. How've you been?" she questioned.
"I've been fine. Haden and Minx are also doing well. What about you? Are you staying healthy?"
"I'm fine right now. I was able to go to work today for the morning shift. The doctor is only letting me just do one shift."
"That's good. Anyway, the reason I called was because I found this old locket. It has a picture of a woman. I don't know who, but she looks similar to me."
"Oh, I'm not sure, I'd have to see. How about we spend the weekend together? I'll get a taxi since I'm not allowed to drive, ok?"
"Sounds good. I'll let everyone else know, bye."
  "Bye."
I hung up the phone, realizing how lonely my mom must be. My dad left us when I was four and I had no brothers and sisters. When my mom's anemia got really bad, I'd stay with Minx and her family. "Who was that?" Minx asked.
"It was my mom. She's getting better and she's coming here to spend the weekend with us," I answered. A smile came across Minx's face. "I'm glad she's feeling better. It'll be nice to see her again," Minx said, giving me a sympathetic hug.

                             ***************

While Haden and Minx helped prepare for my mom's arrival, I paced back and forth by the door. "Rei, why don't you help us clean the kitchen while you wait?" Haden suggested.
"The manager will get pissed if he has to replace the floor because of your pacing," Minx added. I bit on my thumbnail and stopped my pacing. "I'm sorry, but I'm so excited to see my mom," I calmly said.
"We're all excited, Rei, but please calm down. I haven't seen Aunt Virginia in a long time, but I'm not getting worked up about it," Haden said, empathy in his tone. He's right, I thought. Then the three of us perked as we heard a knock at the door. Minx gave me thumbs up and I took a deep breath before opening the door. It was my mom. I gave her a warm welcome to our home with a hug. She returned the embrace, her bony body giving me the chills. Even though she's lost a lot of weight and her skin became transparent, her eyes still had the same lively look I remember from my childhood.
"Haden, you look like your mother. You hair is longer and shiner since I last saw you," my mom said, caressing Haden's hair. He chuckled and said, "Thanks, Minx has been the boss of my eating and grooming habits." Then she turned to Minx and gave her a warm hug. "Thank you for being there for Rei."
"That's what friends are for," Minx replied, a bright blush appearing across her cheeks. After my mom settled in and took a nap, Haden ordered some Chinese take-out for dinner. "Feeling better?" I asked my mom as she entered my room.
"Yes, very much better, thank you. Now how come your room was never this clean when you lived with me?" my mom said, sitting next to me on my bed.
"Well, when you got really sick and I had to stay with Minx, I had to learn what's important for living. I was also living under a different set of rules and a different culture." My mom chuckled and then kissed my forehead. Oh yea! The locket! I thought. I reached for the locket and showed it to my mom. "Oh! Is this the thing you wanted to show me?" she asked.
"Yes, open it," I insisted. She popped open the little bronze door and covered her mouth once she saw the picture. "She's beautiful and looks so much like you, Rei," she stated.
"I know, but who is she?" I questioned. My mom sighed and shrugged her shoulders. "I don't know, sweetie," she paused and looked at me with sad eyes.
"Rei, you're adopted. My ex-husband, Joshua, and I wanted a baby, but we found out he was sterile and with my weak body, it'd be hard for me to bare a child. Then Joshua's sister, your Aunt Ellen, referred us to an adoption center. There were a lot of children and babies to pick from, but we saw you. Something about you made my heart flutter as if I were falling in love. The nuns who worked there said your body was glowing when they found you in the local graveyard. Joshua found that weird, but I didn't care, I wanted to be your mother."
"So Haden isn't my cousin? Does he know?"
"Well, he is, but not by blood and yes he knows. Are you angry? Confused?" she questioned. I took a deep breath and looked her in the eyes. "No, I'm not. Well, maybe confused, but I'm not angry or sad. I'm glad you picked me. Mind if I still call you mom?" I replied.
"No! I don't mind," she cried as she threw her bony arms around me. I let her hold onto me till she was able to pull herself together. When parents tell their child that they're adopted in the movies, the child would often get upset and run away. I would always wonder why they did that. If I could talk to them, I'd say "Be glad someone loves you and took you in during your time of need."
When Haden and Minx came home with dinner, my mom and I left my room and followed the couple into the kitchen. Minx set the table and Haden took the food out of the brown, paper bag. "Smells delicious," I said, the scent of sesame chicken, pork lo mein, fried rice, and egg rolls entering my nostrils. I could hear everyone's stomachs growling as we sat down for dinner. "Oh! My pills! I need to grab my pills out of my purse. I'll be right back," my mom said. She went to the living room and came back with several pill bottles. "I made sure to get my refills before I came over," she said after she downed one of each pill.
"To health!" I shouted, raising my can of ice cold Arizona peach tea. Everyone joined in and raised their drinks. "To health," they repeated. Minx and I giggled and then we went back to stuffing our faces with Chinese food. "So how's NOIR? Anything new?" my mom asked.
"Well, a few days ago we had a gig. Our fans seem to be growing fast. A few offered to make shirts for us to sell. We declined for now, but will consider the idea for later. Lil, our fashion designer, is working on our official band website. After dinner, we'll show it to you," Haden said.
"I'm glad you're doing something you enjoy. Oh! I got the demo tape you sent to me awhile back. Keep up the good work!" my mom added with a smile. Minx laughed, choking on her food a little when some pieces of rice flew down the wrong tube. "Meanwhile my family doesn't care, as long as I have a job. They would much rather have me go to trade school or something but they can't afford it," Minx said.
"But because of the money we get at our gigs and my part-time job, we're able to send you to the community college," Haden added. Minx smiled and puckered up for a kiss from Haden. "Awww, how cute," my mom sighed. For a second, I saw myself with November in some sort of random day dream. "Rei? Are you finished?" Minx questioned, snapping me back to reality.
"Oh! Yea, here," I answered, allowing Minx to take my plate. I stood and walked out of the kitchen. "Mom, come with me and I'll show you the website Haden was talking about," I said.
"But the-," she started before Haden cut her off.
"Go with Rei. Tonight is our night to clean up after dinner," Haden said while pointing to Minx and himself. My mom nodded her head and followed me into my room. I turned on the computer and double clicked on the FoxFire icon. A screen popped up with NOIR's official band site. "It's still not finished. Lil only got a few gig dates up and band member bios," I said.
"I see, I want to see what's on here for the bios," my mom replied. I double clicked on the button labeled 'bios' and an image popped up. "Whose bio would you like to see first?" I asked. My mom pointed at the picture of Minx. "Ok, it says name: Minx, age: 19.5, birthplace: Chicago, Illinois, band position: drummer, favorite colour: dark green, general favorites: Dame Chocolate, My Chemical Romance, Carlos Mancia. Next?" The next person my mom pointed to was Haden. "Name: Haden, age: 23, birth place: Aurora, Illinois, band position: guitarist, favorite colour: blue, general favorites: Combichrist, Stephen King, slasher-movies. Next?" My mom pointed to November. "Oh, I see, you want me last. Anyway, name: November, age: 22, birthplace: Williamsburg, Virginia, band position: bassist, favorite colour: black, general favorites: ghost stories, Phantom of the Opera, Cradle of Filth. Lastly, name: Rei, age: 19, birthplace: N/A, band position: vocalist, favorite colour: blue, general favorites: French and Japanese art, Hello Kitty, Taia." I took a deep breath because of all the talking.
"So when do I meet November and Lil?" my mom asked.
"Tomorrow. I'm wicked tired and I bet you are too," I answered. After my mom left into the other room, I gave November a quick call to tell him our plans. For some bizarre reason, for the rest of the night, I kept having dreams about being with November.

Haden and Minx were sitting in the kitchen, discussing NOIR's next gig. They were talking about a local band jam and signed us up to audition for a spot. "Does Nov know about this?" I asked, pouring some freshly brewed coffee into a cup.
"Of course he does. He was the one who let us know about it. Lil is working on designs for our outfits," Haden answered. I took a sip of the coffee, mentally bracing myself for the burn. Then the phone rang, the ring echoing through the still room. "Hello?" I questioned, picking up the receiver.
"Rei? It's me, Lil," Lil spoke on the other end of the line.
  "Hey, what's going on?"
"Remember that dream you told me about when we were at the beach?"
  "Yea, what about it?"
"I found a book with the story in it. I'll bring it over right now," Lil said and then hung up. I put the receiver back into the cradle and took a slurp of the coffee, which cooled off a little since the first sip. "Who was that?" Minx asked.
"It was Lil. She's bringing over a book for me to read," I answered. She looked at me with curious eyes before she turned her attention back to Haden. She continued her conversation with my cousin as I left to change into clean clothes.
A half an hour later, Lil arrived with the book. "Here, I put a bookmark where the story is. Well, I have stuff to do like picking up dry cleaning, buying stamps, and helping my godmother with her yard sale. Bye," Lil quickly said and then left. I closed the door and sat on the couch in the living room. The book's title was hard to read and looked worn away. I opened it and the book was published in 1898. Under that, a little note stated that some of these stories date back to the 17th century. "Wow, I can't believe a book this old with stories even older is in such good condition. At least the cover is the only thing in bad condition," I muttered to myself. I softly kissed the cover and then flipped to the book marked page. No title for the story. It was only marked with a small 16 to let the reader know that it's a different story. "I guess this story never had a title or is so old that the title was forgotten," I muttered again.
The story was very beautiful, but also sad. It was about a man who lived in the light and a woman who lived in darkness. The only time they met was at the bank of the river. The woman stayed under the willows while the man stood at the shore. Because of their differences, it was nearly impossible for them to be together.
One day, the man abandons the light to be with the woman in the darkness. However, the woman's family refused to have the man stay with them, so she was forced to leave. Forever they walked unaccepted by both light and dark, but at least they had each other.
I closed the book and sighed, the same sigh a love struck girl makes. "What's shaken bacon?" Minx questioned, sitting next to me with a bowl of dry cereal.
"Nothing really. I was only reading a short story," I answered. Minx leaned over to look at the book, her mouth full of cereal. "The book's title is worn away. Even the story has no title," I said, answering her question before she asked it. Minx shoveled another spoon full of cereal in her mouth. "Well, I'm going to go to the library and do some research. Wanna come?" I said.
"Yea, sure! Haden, I'm going with Rei to the library," she announced to my cousin, handing him her unfinished bowl. Then we exited the apartment and walked several blocks to the public library. The library was recently remodeled, so we had no idea where anything was. "Computers, computers," I mumbled.
"Do you need help?" one of the elderly librarians asked.
"Yes, we haven't been here in awhile, so we have no idea where anything is. My friend has a story she wishes to research," Minx spoke for me. The librarian put on her glasses, ready for analyzing. "The story doesn't have a title, but this whole book was published in 1898. Some of these stories can date back to the 17th century," I said.
"Oh, I see. Well, follow me and I'll take you to this history archives," she replied. Minx and I followed the woman up the old iron staircase and into a dark, dusty room. "These poor books are rarely used. Children prefer TV and computers over these treasures. Anyway, there's a table and a few lamps back there. Right here is a computer just incase you don't see anything here. By the door is a phone that will call the front desk if you need help," the librarian said before leaving. I walked over to the table and placed the book on it. "Where to start?" Minx questioned.
"Go to the computer and collect the title of history books that contain records from the 17th century to 1898," I answered. Minx nodded her head and began typing away on the keyboard. "Ok, what next?" she asked.
"Faerie tales and tales based on fact…or something," I answered. Minx's nails made a loud tapping sound as she typed on the keyboard. Then her tongue began to click with frustration. "Look at those books on the second row on shelf F," Minx finally said, pointing behind her. I followed her directions and pulled a bunch of books off the row. After taking the books to the table, I skimmed through the books, taking notes in the little note pad I brought with me. "Any thing yet?" Minx asked.
"Nope. Even the book itself doesn't have a reference page," I answered. Minx sighed and began to put away a few of the books. "I know, this is annoying. I have a few more books to go through and then we can call it quits," I said, responding to Minx's frustration. My dearest friend flashed a smile of relief. Then a small light of hope flickered in my brain. "Wait, what if we're looking in the wrong section? Something is telling me that we should be look in the mythology section and not history," I said. Minx's dark eyes lit up and she ran to the phone to call front desk.
The same old woman from before came into the room. "Any luck?" she asked. Minx and I shook our heads. "But, we want to look through the mythology section," I said. The librarian scratched her head, her fingers getting tangled in her gray, wire-like hair. "That seems to be a very popular category with high school students," she said as we followed her downstairs and into a more well lit room.
"I remember taking that class. All we did was study Greek and Roman myths, very lame," Minx replied. The librarian nodded her head and then cleared her throat. "Right here is everything we have on mythology," she said before leaving.
"Must be busy. Anyway, let's look for Wiccan myth or pagan myth. This book did come from Lil after all," I said. Minx began to read the spines of each book, pulling out a few of them. I took the books Minx pulled out and went to the closest table. "Oooh, Pagan Myth, but it'll probably have a few things like how Halloween originated," I muttered, looking at the top book on the pile.
After a few hours of deep research and a few laughs, I was ready to give up. "This is pissing me off! I can't seem to find anything," I growled.
"Have you thought of asking Lil?" Minx suggested. She was right. After all this frustration, I could of easily asked the one who gave me the book. Minx and I put away the library books and left the building. "Wait, do you know where Lil lives?" Minx asked.
"Of course I do. She lives in one of those big houses in the rich people neighborhood," I answered. Now the family Lil and November comes from, they're not really rich; they just inherit a lot of money from dead relatives. Even the house they live in was inherited from a relative. "Rei, can you spare some chance for the bus?" Minx asked after we entered the bus that usually comes by the library once every hour.
"Yea sure," I answered, putting two-dollar bills into the open slit on the locked, steel box that sat next to the driver. Minx and I took a seat in the back of the bus where it's usually empty. As the bus went back into motion, I looked around, seeing who else was on the bus with us. There were three other people, besides us, on the bus; an old couple probably in their 70s and a man who looked very unclean. "Rei, why is that guy staring at us?" Minx asked, noticing the man too.
"I don't know, but look away," I whispered. Minx and I dropped our gazes at the floor, glancing at him every now and then to see if he's still looking. "Willson Street," the bus driver announced.
"Thank god," Minx and I muttered at the same time. As we began to get off the bus, the man who was looking at us grabbed my wrist. "Let go!" I shouted, pulling away. The man's grip kept its hold. "The kingdom is in danger," he mumbled.
"Let go of her, you creep!" Minx snapped, pulling me away.
"The kingdom! We need your help!" he cried. Minx and I rushed off the bus and onto the sidewalk. While the bus pulled away, Minx checked my wrist, a pink mark where the man grabbed me. "Does it hurt?" she asked. I shook my head as Minx released my wrist. My best friend smiled warmly and we walked up to the front door of a large, old house.
We knocked on the door since there was no doorbell system installed. "Coming," a voice called from the other side of the door. The door opened. "Oh, hello Rei, Minx. It's been awhile. Come in," a middle-aged woman greeted, dressed in fine silks with moons and stars stitched into the silk.
  "Is Lil home?" I asked.
"Of course she is, darlings," she answered with a wide grin, walking to the foot of the stairs. "Lilith! Rei and Minx are looking for you!"
"Ok! Let them in!" Lil replied. We bowed our heads and rushed up the stairs and into Lil's room. "What's up?" she asked, looking up from fixing a tear in a shirt.
"First of all, Lilith is your real name?" Minx questioned. Ever since we first met Lil, November told us to call her Lil. We knew it was short for a name like Lily or something, but we never thought it'd be Lilith. In ancient times, she was the most beautiful demon who was seductive and murdered or at least that's the version I heard. I also heard she was one of the first vampires. However, Lil is nothing like that woman. "Yes, Lilith is my real name. Now don't get me wrong, I love my name, but to keep the Christians and Catholics away from my family, it's best to just have everyone refer me as Lil," the Asian girl answered.
"Ok, anyway, onto what we really came here for. I read the story, but we can't find any background information on it," I said, holding out the book Lil let me borrow. Lil walked towards her computer and turned it on. "A while back, I did some research on it. It turns out that story was thought of as a prophecy. However, in the real version of the prophecy, everyone was miserable and the world went into complete chaos. In order to stop this misery, they had to find the two who'd cause such misery and dispose of them. That's all I found on that story from the books in the family's library," Lil said, skimming the notes she typed up on her computer.
"It doesn't say exactly what happened to the two?" I asked.
"Nope," Lil answered, turning her computer off. "Anything else?"
"Nope," Minx said as I gave Lil her book back. Lil placed the book on her bed. "Want to stay for tea? My mother makes excellent tea that is suppose to be very refreshing," Lil asked. Minx and I shook our heads. "We really should be going back home," I answered
"How about I give you a ride then?" November spoke from behind us.
"Sure," Minx and I answered at the same time. November pulled his car keys out of his pocket and lead us downstairs. "So, what's going on?" he asked as went entered his car.
"Nothing much. We finally got some answers to a story," I answered. November nodded his head and said nothing else the whole ride home.

"Hey, wake up. Rei, are you ok?" a soft voice spoke. My eyes fluttered open to see a concerned Minx just inches away from my tired face. I sat up in my bed as Minx sat at the foot. "What's going on?" I groaned, rubbing the sleep out of my eyes.
"Haden and I could hear you screaming in your sleep. You were crying, rolling back and forth, sweating as if you were surrounded by fire, and screaming in terror. Haden called November and Lil. You were scaring us," she answered. Haden walked into my room, holding a freshly brewed cup of coffee. "Are you ok? What were you dreaming about?" Haden asked. He handed me the cup of coffee and brushed a droplet of sweat off my brow. "I'm fine now and I don't remember what it was I was dreaming about," I answered, staring into the cup of light brown liquid.
I began to drink my coffee as a knock from the door echoed through out our home. "I'll get it," Minx instantly said. November and Lil stepped into my bedroom moments later, Lil holding a book in her arms. "We heard about your episode and came here right away," November spoke with authentic concern in his voice.
"Do you remember your dream? Even at least a small detail?" Lil questioned. I shook my head and took gulp of coffee. The petite Asian sat next to me, facing me. She placed her book on her lap and opened it to a book marked page. "The way Haden described what was going on, I say this sounded like a vision. It's very common to forget a dream the instant you wake. However, it is possible to remember it if a piece of it gets triggered by something," Lil explained. I soaked in what she had said, attempting to remember at least the smallest detail from my dream. "Nothing?" Minx quietly asked. I shook my head, unable to summon pieces of my dream from my subconscious.
I finally got time to myself after everyone left my room, allowing me to bathe and get dressed. As close as we are, it isn't comfortable lying in bed wearing only a T-shirt and panties with a bunch of people crowding me. Then I saw a quick flash while watching the bath water circle the drain. It was only for a second, but it's not everyday you think you saw blood instead of water circling that drain. "Lil, I saw something very weird while I was in the bathroom," I said, pulling on my Little Red Riding Hood tee, which I wore with my black short-shorts and black thigh high stockings.
  "What is it?" she replied.
"For a flash second, I saw blood in the bath instead of water. It could be something from my dream, but not an exact scene, right?" Lil nodded her head, taking mental notes on each word I uttered. "This is like a scene from a horror film," Minx mumbled with a smirk. All eyes instantly went to her. "Um, well, in a horror film, the main character usually ends up seeing flashes from a murder she or he committed or something similar to that," she added. Minx flashed a nervous grin as everyone looked at each other. "Are you saying I am or will commit a murder?" I asked.
"Oh! No! I'm not! I was just saying that this sounded like the beginning of a bad horror film," Minx replied, justifying herself.
"However, the blood could be symbolizing something important from your dream, so Minx, you're half right with the murder. Now it doesn't mean Rei will murder someone, but it means there will be blood shed," Lil analyzed, putting her two cents into the conversation. I let out a sigh, the whole talk of death causing me to feel a little depressed. Haden looked at me and smiled. "How about we go out and do something fun?" Haden said to change to subject. I smiled back at Haden, sending him a silent thanks.
A few hours later, we ended up at the beach. It was partly cloudy, but very hot and humid outside. I laid out a large blanket and set up the umbrella. Meanwhile, Minx jumped on Haden's back as he stepped into the water. Lil sat on the blanket and opened one of her books while rubbing on some baby oil. "Aren't you joining us?" November asked after he finished rubbing on some baby oil Lil was using.
"No, I'll stay here with Lil," I answered, sitting next to November's sister. He shrugged his shoulders and joined the others. I hugged my legs close to my body, resting my chin on my knees. "Navi likes you, you know," Lil muttered, her nose still in her book. "He tells me about his dreams and you appear in them a lot. I laughed when he told me that he wakes up before he can admit his feelings." I fingered my toes while my brain soaked in her words. "I had a dream about him once too. It was way before we met. In my dream, I was standing by a river that was surrounded by willow trees. Then I see a strong, handsome young man with light skin and long dark hair. He was wearing some sort of traditional Asian clothing while riding a canoe. Meanwhile, I was wearing clothes of a Victorian aristocrat. He looks at me, smiles, and then I wake," I said. Even though Lil was wearing sunglasses, I knew her eyes were wide open. "That sounds like an old story I heard years ago," she replied.
"Romeo and Juliet?" I questioned. She shook her head. "No, it's an old pagan story Navi's and my mother told me when I was five or something. The two characters were from high societies but different worlds. He was of the Light and she was of the Dark," Lil explained. I bit my lip, unsure what to say next as Lil went back to her book. Then I remembered the news report from the other day. "Have you heard anything new about the dragon?" I asked.
"About a day and a half ago, my godmother, went to a Gathering and she swore that she heard a growl from a large beast. Then she noticed a huge patch of dead grass a few feet in front of her. A little later, her and a few others checked it out and the dead grass was in the shape of giant Y's. This brings down my theory to the Black Hoods. When they go by foot, they move like bats, so they grab onto something at their eye level to help them get around. It must be injured at its feet because of the dead grass patches," she answered, closing her book.
  "What about the other theories?"
"Well, Dragonflies, their body temperature is so high that it would burn down the whole area by standing in it. Meanwhile the Silver Bloods have four legs and walk on all four of them," she explained. I nodded my head and then stretched out on the blanket with a big yawn. Navi likes you, you know. Lil's words echoed throughout my brain. November surely is handsome and looked like prince charming in my dream, but to think he has a crush on me is weird. For a long time, he's been a friend and a band mate. I looked at November sitting on the little island floating on the water. Thanks to the anchor chained to the island, it won't float away. "You like him too, don't you?" Lil teased.
"Shut up!" I shouted, slightly embarrassed that she noticed my staring. Lil giggled and stood. "You want anything at the concession stand?" she asked.
"Yea, can you get me a blue raspberry slushie?" I asked, handing her a five-dollar bill that I took out of my purse. She smiled and walked away, her sandals making a flip-flop sound. "Not going with her?" November asked. I looked at him, a little spooked for his ability to show up unnoticed like a ninja. "No, I'll stay here to watch our stuff. Besides, she's only getting some food," I answered. November smiled, ringing out his long hair before sitting next to me. "How's the water?" I asked. He shrugged his shoulders making that 'I don't know' face. "Here's your slushie and three-fifty is your change," Lil said once she came back, hanging me my drink and my change.
"Blue raspberry?" November asked. I happily nodded my head, sucking down my slushie, forgetting about the evil, yet entertaining, brain freeze. "Careful that you don't drink it too fast," Lil quickly said. Just as the last word rolled off her tongue, I got brain freeze. November and Lil laughed as I slammed my forehead against my left palm. "What's wrong with Rei?" I heard Minx ask.
"Looks like brain freeze," Haden said. I nodded my head while gritting my teeth, the brain freeze wearing off. That time, I joined my beloved friends in a moment of laughter. Sometimes it's the random moments in life that make it worth living. I remember my mom telling me that the most enjoyable moments will be with the one I'll spend my whole life with. Then she'd tell me to live my life to the fullest. I often wonder what she'd say to me at a moment like this.
"So, Rei, are you gonna come swimming with us?" Minx asked.
"Yea, sure!" I replied. I finished my last few slurps of my now liquid treat and then joined Minx, Haden, and November in the water.

For a long time, I've wished that my life were more of a faerie tale rather than reality. When I was a child, my mom would read to me stories of beautiful maidens, handsome warriors, and terrible demons. In some cases, there was no warrior and it was a faerie tale about strong, valiant women. I'd often daydream about all those characters, wondering what my life would be like if they were real.
What if Cinderella or Snow White were real? When I got a little older, I discovered a large book filled with the same faerie tales from my childhood and ones I never heard of. After the end of the book, I asked myself why these stories were much better. Where's the bloody slipper and eyeless stepsisters in Disney's Cinderella? How come the evil queen didn't dance to death in hot iron slippers in Disney's Snow White? All these famous faerie tales were censored because of the bloody and morbid themes. Even to this day, I'd ask myself, "Why?"
Though I'm not a princess nor angelic like a princess, my life can be like a faerie tale, right? A punk like me can live a faerie tale too. I was just hanging out with my cousin and his girlfriend in the shack at the beach one day. It was raining and we had to go inside. "It looks like we may have to do a gig inside if the rain is gonna keep going like that," Minx, my cousin's girlfriend, groaned.
Minx and I have been best friend since the 3rd grade. She's a Chicana but loves rock music with a passion. My cousin and I call her the Original Latin Goth. How'd Minx and my cousin meet? Well, it was during a family reunion. Minx and I were going to a local band jam that night, so my mom allowed her to come to the reunion. My cousin, Haden, decided to tag along with us since he also shares the same passion for rock music. It was instant romance between the two as if Cupid's arrow had struck them in the back. They hooked up that night.
"Well let's hope our bassist gets here soon. We've got an hour till we have to set up stage," I paused, rubbing Minx's shoulder to reassure her. "Hopefully, the rain shows signs of stopping by time he comes." A few years after Minx and Haden met, the three of us formed a band called Tournee du Chat Noir. While trying to come up with a band name, I was looking at some French painting replicas that were hanging in the Park District's Art Center. I saw the yellow picture with an angry black cat staring back at me. Then I thought of how the black cat is the misfit of Feline Tribe. The Persians and the Siamese are the royalty cats. They rule over all the other cats, meanwhile the black cats sit in the back, only their mysterious orange eyes are visible from the shadows. In a way, we were a circle of black cats, a circle of misfits, watching society look down on us.
Now putting the band together was a little harder than getting a name. Minx's brother had taught her how to play the drums, so she was automatically our drummer. Haden used to play guitar when he was younger, so he became our lead guitarist. I took lead singer since I can't do anything else and I took some voice lessons when I was a child. After our first jam session, we didn't sound too bad until we realized becoming an awesome band would be difficult until we got someone who played bass. Well, a the time that's what we thought.
That's when we met November. He came from a family Wiccans and played one hell of a guitar during his audition! Then he suggested we changed our name to something shorter since a long French name can be easily butchered. That's how NOIR came to be.
"Sorry I'm late," November apologized as he came in, taking off his raincoat. "Rei, my sister will be here later. She had to finish the dress you're wearing for our gig." November's sister is one hell of a seamstress and makes our clothes from scratch for the gigs. "Thanks, Nov. Your sister is big help to us. Do you know if it is suppose to rain all day?" I asked.
"Sadly, it's suppose to rain all day," Minx said, coming back from the concession stand. Haden sighed and began towards the stage to help the beach staff set up the stage. "I was hoping to perform outside," Haden groaned.
"We all were, but at least we still can play. Be thankful," I replied. Haden nodded his head. Minx followed Haden, her curly hair bouncing as she jogged up, onto stage. "This rain is going to ruin my perm," a deep feminine voice spoke at the door. It was November's sister at the door. "Navi, help me with my stuff," she groaned as she scrunched the big, loose curls in her hair. Hearing his sister call him by his pet name tickled my ears, which caused me to giggle. "Shut up," November growled as he tugged a trunk towards me. He opened it and pulled out a beautiful, frilly black dress with a matching petticoat. "Go put it on and then I'll help you with your hair and make-up," November's sister spoke as she put her umbrella in the umbrella holder by the door.
I left to change into the dress. It fit snug on my body, showing off my important curves that complement my body. "You did a good job, Lil," November commented. Lil flashed a smile and began to work on my hair and make-up.
The rest of the day sank into the night. We rocked hard as our audience begged for an encore.  The audience was so egger for more, that I swear my voice was going to give out.
A few days later, I woke up to the sound of someone knocking on the front door. My voice was a bit scratchy and sore from the gig a few nights before. "Yes?" I croaked, opening the door. November walked into my apartment and I closed the door. "What's wrong, Nov?" I walk into the kitchen to start up the coffee maker as November sat on a wooden chair that sat by the little round table by the frig. "Lil had a dream last night. A lot of it was very abstract and hard to understand, but she thinks you may be in danger," November explained. I grabbed two mugs and poured coffee into them, mixing in some creamer into each cup before handing one cup to my good friend. "Any details on her dream?" I asked. November shook his head, taking a sip of coffee. I sighed and turned on the TV to the 9 o'clock news. There was a man standing in front of a big map of Illinois, showing what the weather will be for the day. "Geez, how long is it going to rain?" I groaned when the 5-day forecast popped up on the screen. November reached over to mess with the TV dial, changing it to a different news program. "…. This is the forth-mysterious forest fire that has occurred this week…" a female news anchor spoke with a monotone voice. November and I looked at each other with baffled reactions. I sat in the empty chair next to his and turned up the TV volume. "…We have been told that a scale from a very large lizard has been found in the ashes. Scientists have been unable to uncover which creature this scale came from.
"The closest relative they were able to detect is the Kimono Dragon…" she continued. November instantly stood from the chair, slamming the coffee cup on the counter. "Stay here, Rei. I'm gonna go talk to Lil about this and see what she has in her old mythical beast books," he said and then he left.
The buzzing from the TV was giving me a headache. After I turned it off, the pulsing in my head grew so loud, I thought my head was going to burst. Even the ibuprofen couldn't cure the pain. I stripped naked and turned on the shower to drown the pain away. However, the pain worsened to a pulsing pain to a pain that felt like someone was driving piercing needles into my skull.
As my hand touched the phone so that I could call the doctor, the pain vanished. "What the heck was that?" I muttered, changing from bathrobe to a short, black silk gown. Then I twisted my damp, dark chocolate brown hair into a messy bun. "Dragons don't exist or do they and they finally woke?" I randomly thought out loud. The phone rang and I picked up the receiver. "Hello?" I answered, looking at the caller I.D. It was November calling from his cell phone.
"I'm on my way there, Rei. Lil is with me. She's bringing her book ..ons with her," November spoke from the other end of the line. He hung up and I put the phone down into its cradle. Then the front door opened. Minx, Haden, and I all live in the same apartment, so when the door randomly opens, I assume it's either Minx or Haden. This time it was Minx coming home from her morning classes at the community college. "Did you hear about the scale on the news? My father was always telling me about demons since I was a kid. He's probably at the church, praying for protection," she laughed. "My father isn't the religious type, but this stuff scares him into entering a church." Minx stuck out her tongue in amusement and then tossed her purse on the table in the kitchen. I followed her and sat in the same chair from earlier. "Minx, about ten minutes before you entered that door, I had the worse headache known to man. I wanted to shoot myself to get rid of the pain," I said. Minx sat in the same chair November did and looked at me seriously. "Describe the pain," she replied.
"It started as a pulsing pain and then transformed into a stabbing pain. Almost like an unseen force was digging into my skull with piercing needles," I explained. Minx covered her mouth, followed by a knock at the door. "Come in!" I shouted, not dropping my gaze from Minx. November and Lil entered. Lil was holding a super thick book in her arms. She dropped the book on the table with a loud thump. "Ok, I have different theories on which dragon this could be. There's the Silver Blood, they live in woodland areas and mountain ranges. They have enough power to burn down a little over ¼ of Texas. Their scales are greenish with a silver sheen and have silver blood, hence the name. There's also the Black Hoods, they live in dark areas and have very nasty attitudes. They have poisonous blood and acidic saliva. Unlike the traditional dragon, they look more like birds because of the feathers. Lastly, there's the Legendary Dragonflies. They are as tall as the Statue of Liberty, have two sets of wings, and no eyes. They have heat sensors and have incredible hearing. It's said that they bleed plasma," Lil explained.
"Now these are just theories Lil developed, so don't believe them until we gain further information," November added. Minx glanced at Lil and then November. "Why are you talking like we have to do something about this?" she questioned.
"Lil and I come from a long line of Wiccans. There are stories of dragons, faeries, demons, and other beasts. Most of them are from the Dark Ages. Anyway, one day, all of them went deep into the earth and fell into a very deep sleep," the gothic bassist answered, his long hair concealing his face. There was a long silence in the room for a long ten minutes. It was very uncomfortable until Minx broke the silence. "So Rei was telling me something weird. She was saying that earlier, she got this bad headache that turned into a stabbing pain. I remember something my grandma told me about the Devil's Knife. It is usually felt in the torso area, but very rarely it is felt in the head. Grandma told me that those who practiced voodoo would evoke the devil and he would hurt the one cursed," Minx spoke. Lil and November fixed their eyes on me. "I'm fine now," I muttered with a nervous chuckle.
"Yes, but if it comes back, you must call us ASAP! I've heard of this in another book I've read. It usually happens once or twice in the victim's life. And Minx, if anything happens to you or Haden, please call," Lil replied. The Asian girl kissed my head as if she were cleansing or blessing my skull. Then we hung out and talked more until Haden come home from his part-time job. We explained what was going on. He told us that he had a dream that everything from vampires to faeries were real and was after a few others and us. He said that everyone else was killed on the spot. Lil nearly fainted because of what Haden said. November took her home and the three of us watched funny movies to help ease our thoughts.
